Excellent Introduction to Soccer book
By Nick
Despite the fact that soccer is played the world over, sometimes it's hard to ask for information to learn more about the sport without drawing the ire of friends. Soccer for Dummies does an excellent job at trying to provide an overview of the sport and why it has the global following.

The book is broken down into 5 major parts: Kicking Off, Playing the Game, Exploring The World of Soccer, The Fan's Enclosure and The Part of Tens. The book is broken down in a granular enough fashion that you can easily skip around the book. What actually impressed me the most besides the level of clarity and depth that Tom Dunmore provides as the author, but the fact that there's a good portion of the book dedicated to coaching and keeping fit for the game - making this a great choice for a youth coach or a recreational player.

If you're unathletic like I am, but enjoy the sport, the section The Fan's Enclosure does a great job in capturing the excitement that fans have towards the sport, and presents it in a welcoming manner. It covers national and club rivalries, allowing for you to understand the numerous competitions that go on during the course of the year. And most importantly, it does a good job at explaining the runup to the World Cup in 2014 and the complex way that countries have to go through in order to qualify.

The book also does a good job at pointing out the important teams and players throughout the current era and throughout soccer history. It also gives you an idea of why those players, such as Pele and Diego Maradona, are loved and loathed intensely depending on the company you keep.

Overall, this is a marvelous introduction to the world of soccer, and helps a casual fan take the next step into becoming an enthusiast for the most widely played game in the world.

I Appreciate Soccer Much More Now
By scesq
I am someone who watches soccer during the men's and women's World Cup and during the Olympics but that's about it. This book gave me a greater appreciation of the soccer that is played at these events and makes me want watch soccer more as a whole.

Many parts of this book were perfect for me. I learned how the game is played and basic strategy. I learned the history of soccer and the history of famous soccer teams. In fact, there is one chapter that deals with the history of the World Cup which gave me greater appreciation of something I have watched.

There are also chapters on clubs and leagues around the world. I read about Chelsea and Real Madrid and AC Milan. These teams will be on television now and then and I plan to watch a match now I know more about the teams.

In fact, there is a chapter on how to find soccer matches on television and the internet and even on DVD. Another chapter look at reading about soccer and looks at newspapers, books, magazines and the internet. This book gave me resources to appreciate soccer more.

Currently the Confederation Cup is being played. It occurs the year before the World Cup. I watched a little of one match before reading this book but I now plan on watching a couple of the final matches and I will appreciate them more because of this book.

The last three chapters look at the ten greatest players, ten greatest games and ten greatest teams of all time. There is an appendix that looks at the winners of different tournaments held around the world.

There is a section of this book that was not for me but will be good for those wanting to play the game. The section looks honing one's soccer skills, getting ready physically for a game and coaching a game.

If you don't know much about soccer this is an easy way to learn about the game. Like all Dummies' books you get a good understanding of the subject in an easy to read fashion. I will appreciate soccer so much more because of this book.

Good book for fundamentals, maybe too much "history" and player profiles
By Toodles!
I typically love the Dummies books, and this is a good book as well. I'm in my 40's and have never really played soccer. My kids play, and I want to learn more about it - some of the technical details. Probably half of this book was applicable for what I needed - the rules / strategies. The "World Scene", the history of soccer, the depth of info on the great players - that was not of interest to me. I just want to know some soccer basics. They also cover equipment, which was somewhat helpful, and even training/first-aid. When discussing skills/moves, there are some pictures/graphics to help show was is the proper way to head a ball versus the improper way.

I take the star off due to the "history" provided and not what I wanted. I'm sure many others will appreciate it, but that's just me. So, I kinda recommend this book depending on the price and what you are looking to get out of a book. I'm not sure if there are betting "beginner" books or not.
