"Paradise Lost

In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. The world is a paradise—and then, in a moment, it ends. The council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive.

But scattered across the face of the earth are communities which have returned to the natural life of soil and small farm. In the village of Raven's Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap. Refugees are flooding in, bandits are roaming the woods, and his former lover and his only daughter struggle through the Fallen landscape. Enemies, new and old, gather like jackals around a wounded lion.

But what the jackals do not know is that while old he may be, this lion is far from death. And hidden in the past is a mystery that has waited until this time to be revealed. You cross Edmund Talbot at your peril, for a smith is not all he once was. . . .

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management)."

Review
"Military SF with a difference . . . and as much action as you could hope for. . . . And then there's that quirky sense of humor running like a vein of gold under the mayhem."

"Explosive. . . . Fans of strong military SF will appreciate Ringo's lively narrative and flavorful characters. . . . One of the best new practitioners of military SF."

." . . since [Ringo's] imagination, clearly influenced by Kipling and rock and roll, is fertile, and his storytelling skill sound, [When the Devil Dances] is irresistible."

"[Ringo demonstrates a] flair for fast-paced military sf peopled with three-dimensional characters and spiced with personal drama as well as tactical finesse."

"If Tom Clancy were writing SF, it would read much like John Ringo . . . good reading with solid characterizations--a rare combination."

"Ringo provides a textbook example of how a novel in the military SF subgenre should be written. . . . For those who have read everything David Drake has written or who may have wished that Tom Clancy, Larry Bond or Harold Coyle would write SF, Ringo provides what's needed. . . . Crackerjack storytelling."

Nanomachines vs. Broadswords
By DrPat
This is that unfortunately-rare entry in the sword-and-sorcery genre, a rational tale that begins with a realistic world, and then explains (in a believable way) the reason people might opt for rule by the mightiest swordsman.

As the story begins, Earth is a paradise founded on three things: virtually unlimited power, widespread use of powerful nanomachinery (nanos), and a ruling council of dilettantes whose use of that power is monitored by Mother, a world-sized computer network. Mother decides which uses of power to allow. Mother manages the multitude of sub-microscopic nanos. Mother watches everything.

Mother, however, is not human.

Worse, several of the Council members are all too human, and have figured out how to get what they want despite Mother’s watchfulness. In a coldly calculated move, they lock up all the power sources in a battle between the pro-nano Councilors and themselves. Meanwhile, the rest of the world’s population is instantly reduced from effective immortality to reliance on the few hobbyists who have kept farming, herbal medicine and defense by the sword alive in the world.

Across the world, millions die as power is withdrawn and their protections fail. Explorers on the Sun and deep in the mantle die instantly. People who have Transferred their personality to a cloud of nanos fall into a pile of dead machine-mites. Those who are flying, or swimming far offshore, or living in remote places with no supply of food and water and no roads out, are just as doomed, though it will take them a bit longer to die.

In the region we think of as the USA, refugees begin to flock to the renaissance-faire community of Raven’s Mill. The smith at Raven’s Mill, Edmund Talbot, finds himself the unwilling Mayor of an inviting source of food and slaves, following the inevitable rise of banditry and looting. Fortunately for the town, Talbot knows what is needed to protect civilization from tyranny in such times, and it is more than a stronger sword-arm.

With the help of his wife and daughter, a young man named Herzer Herrick (who chose the wrong side at first), several wonderful military characters (Gunny, for example, is the spit-and-image of ex-Marine Agent Gibbs on NCIS), a sympathetic though embattled Council member, plus a truly ingenious feel for mixing high-tech and medieval arts, Talbot fights his war on several fronts.

The result is a great action thriller, with the excellent combat scenes we’ve come to expect from Ringo, intriguing characters and an expandable plot that leads us easily into a multi-book series of equal quality.

Compelling story
By Kindle Customer
While I absolutely hate authors including unnecessary sex scenes, at least this example keeps s them in context of the story and those few are not unnecessarily graphics either, much better handled than I expected.

The story had a slow build up but after about the first half of the book, the primary characters were well established and the story began to really take off.

I fully intend to continue with the series.

Well done John Ringo.

Mother May I?
By Walt Boyes
In an incredible change of pace from his signature Posleen Carnography series, John Ringo has written the first of a series that will make you think, rail against his points, and maybe even change your point of view about some of the trends in modern society.

For thousands of years, Mother has taken care of us. The giant artificial intelligence, with the help of her bazillions of nanobots, has provided instantaneous transportation, food, lodging, education (if you want it), heat, light, health care, and just about anything you could wish for, including the ability to change shape to any natural or mythological being your little heart desires.

Alas, she hasn't been able to rid the world of psychopaths, and several of them have amassed great power. Power enough to turn much of Mother's safety net off, and turn humanity back to having to do for itself.

This may be a good thing, or it may be a bad thing, but the fact remains that billions died.

This makes it pretty clear who the bad guys are.

The good guys, like all the true heroes, have to discover who they are, and what their duty is, and what the limits of what they can do really are.

The classic example of this is Herzer Herrick, who starts out as a helpless cripple shortly before the Crash, and winds up as the world's Second Greatest Soldier. (Maybe third, you'll have to read the book to find out what I'm talking about).

Read this book. It might help you understand a lot about Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.
