Not the first manual on the market, but the last one you'll ever need

Rarely is the first guide on the market the best guide for a product. The NOOK HD was released in November in time for the holiday buying season and many publishers rushed their books out to either beat Christmas or position themselves to be one of the few search results that would come up when the newly minted and confused NOOK HD owners came to Amazon (or Barnes and Nobel I guess since this is a Nook product we're talking about) looking for help.
The result was as expected some guides were apparently based on beta software that didn't reflect what was shipped with the final NOOK HD. Other guides got the big picture, but didn't take the time to do the appropriate research and lacked depth.
If you were disappointed by guides like this in the past or if you've held out for that elusive, comprehensive, beautifully laid out NOOK HD guide wait no longer. The NOOK HD Missing Manual is that book. I'm going to try to avoid being cliché by saying it should be the manual that shipped with the Nook because frankly it's a hefty (well over 400 pages), but it would be amazing if it had been preloaded and just popped up the first time you turned on the device.
If you've read any of the Missing Manual series before you'll know what to expect in terms of layout and commentary, but if you're new to the series you're in for a treat. Bolded keywords, full color HD screenshots, and clearly labeled "Notes" and "Tips" make finding the exact content you're looking for a breeze. The table of contents is broken down into quite small sections and the index is about as comprehensive as they come. All of that means that if you just want to use this as a reference guide you can, but I'm not sure you'll want to. The best part about the Missing Manual series for me is the commentary. Where other guides tell you what a function does and how to use it, the Missing Manual series makes a point of telling you when a function is amazing and when its really something that should have been left in the beta version. This book continues this trend and it adds a bit of humor at times, which manages to make a 400+ page book incredibly approachable.
Of course layout is great, but without great content its worthless and content is where this guide shines. It covers literally every way that I can think of to interact with the NOOK HD. From which model might be for you if you're still in the buying phase of your NOOK experience, to basic and more advanced setup and button walkthroughs, to reading just about anything you'd ever want (books, magazines, newspapers, PDFs, online content, catalogs, comic books, borrowed content, purchased content, etc.). The guide covers using the NOOK HD more as a tablet to watch videos and listen to music (both on your NOOK and streamed from a variety of services such as Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu Plus), to surf the web, and interact on social media. It even covers more specialized topics like rooting your NOOK to get it to work like an android device. If there's something you want to do with your NOOK HD chances are it's described here (and described in an easy to understand way with enough detail to let you experiment).
If you're struggling with your NOOK HD and even if you understand it well enough, but feel like you're missing out on some of its lesser-known features, wait no longer. The Missing Manual NOOK HD is well laid out, searchable, beautiful, and about as close to comprehensive as I can imagine.

Great Book!

Very user friendly and full of information that was easy to find. This is the first reader tablet that I've bought and didn't understand what the Nook HD+ can do. WOW.... so glad to have this book! The chapters will lead you directly to your questions or problems to find simple answers. The pictures are helpful as well. If you are still lost there is a great index to look through. I feel the book gives enough information and direction that you can pretty much figure it out without being frustrated and feeling the need to wait to ask someone for help.

Nook HD - The Missing Manual - The Book That Should Have
Been In The Box by Preston Gralla is an easy to follow
instruction manual on how to utilize the many functions of
the Nook HD. A strength of the presentation is that it is
highly organized and follows a sequential pattern from
initially setting up the unit to actual use in a plethora of
applications.
Gralla explains the technical capabilities and installation for the
nook including the USB Port Connector, microphone, high
resolution color touchscreen and the SD slot to add more
storage. There is even a section on how to troubleshoot wifi.
The manual covers the Nook HD and HD+.
The nook can perform many tasks like reading ebooks, managing
multimedia and categorizing emails. The manual shows how to
set up the unit, as well as download APPS. In addition, there
is an excellent explanation on how to get files onto the nook,
as well as transfer files from the nook to your computer.
Gralla provides many details on how to set up email,
navigate Gmail, import Facebook contacts, use the nook for
Twitter and lend/borrow books to/from friends. On the Nook HD
you can read a book, experiment with Apps, go online, be social
on Twitter, watch a movie, listen to your favorite music or
