Hard to put down but ending left me unfulfilled and too graphic and too many rape scenes.

I know this is bizarre given that I gave this 2 stars but it's close to being a 5 star book. It's starts a bit slow but really picks up and became hard to put down. However, that being said once I reached the end I found myself unfulfilled and displeased. My other big problem was the extremely detailed and repeated rape scenes and references. The amount of detail and the sheer number of references to rape really makes me question the author. I would guess that there's a rape scene or reference to rape over a 100 times throughout this book. Another big problem with this book is the almost cartoonish untouchability of the villain (think of the good guys as Wile E. Coyote and the villain as Roadrunner). While I would be more inclined to give this more stars if it were a condensed version I just expected more out of a long, in-depth and time consuming book. When you invest as much time into a book as you will with this one I tend to have higher expectations for it. With this book I felt that once I reached the end it didn't feel like the reward I'd expect.

Almost over the top, but still very good and entertaining

This book was great at giving the reader a glimpse into how life might have been in the middle ages. Not just the knights and the battles as we all know too well, but also the dynamics between the crown, the Catholic Church, and the governing titles like Lords and Earls. From that perspective it was a 5-star book. What I thought became tedious at times was the incredible persistence of what I'll just call the bad guys. Every book has its protagonists and antagonists, but it seemed to me that it just kept stretching on and on with evil plans for the do-gooders to overcome. It was somewhat agonizing in that regard. Not entirely predictable, as you never knew who exactly was going to come out on top in each particular battle of good and evil. Call me cynical but it seemed to me that the bad guys were REALLY bad and the good guys were REALLY good. Don't get me wrong, it was a very entertaining book. Lots of very well written material and thought-provoking text. But it wasn't a 5-star book. I feel like it might have been better served as a 2-book series or something. Overall, though, It was a really good book.

Dashed Expectations

Excellent previous books by the author, historical fiction - a favorite genre, set in a fascinating time period, recommended by friends - I could hardly wait to begin! Alas, upon completing this tome, I was once again confronted by a fatal personal flaw - once I begin to realize that I am not enjoying the book, I keep reading. I naively hope that a book will somehow improve, that if I just keep plodding along the dialogue, plot, and characters will capture my heart or my interest. Unfortunately, my perseverance was not rewarded. There's 30 plus hours of my life that I'll never get back.
