Every film or show that we watch, no matter how great the final cut, has its problems during production. Whether it's a bad performance from an actor, a hole in the story or script, continuity or pacing issues, or something being placed in a shot that shouldn't be, there's no shortage of problems encountered once postproduction has begun. Fixing these problems then becomes the job of the editor. This book provides those editors with creative editing solutions they can employ to overcome these problems and is the key to nursing a sick project back to health in the editing room.

Though the book takes an application-agnostic approach, specific solutions are presented for today's most commonly used non-linear editing applications. Solutions more relevant to certain genres are discussed in-depth, as are solutions that editors can employ through the use of simple VFX techniques. Case studies and interviews with Hollywood editors provide readers with real-world problems encountered, and solutions used to overcome them. The companion website provides Quicktime videos and Flash animations visually demonstrating problems and how they were dealt with.

You don't have to be a film professional to benefit from this book
By Christina Paul
One of the most egregious sins on the vast majority of videos that are placed on YouTube and other sites is that they look amateurish or if the footage is good, but the editing is choppy, or unimpresssive. The digital media revolution has made the technology move at an incredible rate but it has also made the tools to make good edits more easily accessible to everyone. John Rosenberg wrote "The Healthy Edit" not just with film students and professionals in mind, but consumers and independent filmmakers that want a professional looking edit.

The book is filled with recent examples of recent films as well as other films throughout film history. It talks about how editing was done in the past but hones in how editors, directors and independent filmmakers can use tools like Final Cut Pro and Avid and get professional looking results. There are a list of ills you can fix in the editing process such as bad acting, continuity issues, character arc issues, poor pacing. Rosenberg evne goes over how to mprove a film's genre expectations and structure through the editing process.

Whether you are a film student or just a hobby-enthusiast, " The Healthy Edit" has something for everyoe.

Generally helpful advice for thinking about how best to edit - but the medical metaphors get tired
By Nate
I really wanted to like this book - and there's a lot here to recommend it. But the persistent medical metaphors tended to distract me from the otherwise useful content.

He means the title seriously - and intends that the reader come to think of the editor as something like a doctor. "Cutting" is like surgery; the book is filled with little asides labelled doctor's notes or doctor's orders or prescriptions; editing technologies are the doctor's "instruments"; nontraditional editing is "alternative medicine"; generic film vocabulary is covered in an "internal medicine" chapter; getting the pacing and rhythm right is the job of the cardiologist; paying attention to dialogue and character development is "psychiatry"; being professional and figuring out how to deal with the many personalities you work with as an editor is "bedside manner" ... you get the point. I found it to be off-putting, and that the analogies were often a bit of a stretch, and that I had to do mental gymnastics to wrap my head around them and get the point (mixed metaphors intended). Personally, I much prefer the more direct and elegant approach to editing of something like Roy Thompson's Grammar of the Edit.

Having said that, as suggested by my mention of just a few of the many doctoring analogies spread throughout, the book covers all the topics you'd expect in an introduction to the craft of editing, and is generally clear and lucid in its coverage. I think that the chapters on editing styles appropriate to different genres offered some helpful insights that I hadn't seen elsewhere. Others have described the rest of the coverage adequately so I won't repeat it. In sum: this is a generally clear and reliable book that covers most of the basics of editing, with a "healthy" emphasis on practice over theory. Personally, I found the profusion of medical metaphors throughout to be a distraction. For some readers, though, the metaphor might work quite well as a mnemonic device and might assist in understanding. For me it felt like the bad taste I had to wash down in order to take my medicine and get better as an editor.

Note: I was given this book by the publishers for the purpose of writing an honest review.

More than technical process
By Riyad Kalla
I originally got this book with the intent that it would help me with my editing by following simple, low-grade technical guidelines when piecing together work but ended up finding much more. The book delves into the art and style of editing, techniques that can be used and how they will change/enhance the feel of a piece and examples from movies that illustrate the point. This would be an excellent text book for any media class, but as it stands it is a must-have resource for anyone getting started with editing that wants to learn the ins and outs quickly and the right way.
