Cowboy up

Cooper is a bull rider with a passion for this ultimate sport. He has been in the pro circuit for over 20 years and its beginning to take its toll. After one last ride he loses against the bull and suffers severe injuries. He returns home to heal and go through therapy where he reminded there is never any place like home. Jean moved to the small town of Morris springs after her college roommate found true love there. Sparks fly between Jean and Cooper but his bad boy ways make Jean weary of love. Throw in the mix an orphaned child with ghosts and physical limitations and you have a heartwarming, challenging story where each person has to cowboy up to find happiness.

Another Fabulous Lone Star Cowboy Read

The Bluest Eyes in Texas by Tori Scott is the third book to take place in Morris Springs, Texas. I enjoyed it just as much as the first two books. While again you are able to be kept up to date with the couples from the first two books, it is not necessary to have read them to enjoy this one. This is the story of Nancy, a physical therapist, and Cooper, an injured bull rider. Living in a small town myself, I found it to be a realistic portrayal of how small rural communities want to look out and help one another. The development of the relationship between Nancy and Cooper is just wonderful written, from her hesitation to his need to prove to himself that "he's still a man". The romance element was right on the money for me, as well as seeing how the characters overcame the obstacles that life had thrown their way. When a child is included who needs Nancy's help and love too, you have one fabulous read.

Another winner!

As usual this is a winner! Tori Scott continues her terrific series with a heart warming tale of family love, mommy love, and romantic love. Here Cooper Saunders finds himself the last place he ever expected to be; in bed and not sure he will ever walk again.
Small towns have great grapevines and everyone soon knows that physical therapist and emotional counselor, Nancy, is drawn into helping this cranky cowboy to face life, and she meets and falls for Becky, a little girl who is wounded in more ways than one.
I truly read this in one night, staying up to finish it and was blessed with the hoped for ending .
Ms. Scott's books do not have to be read in order, but I have read each as it came out. This is my favorite. All of us have hurts that need healing. Sometimes they have to be healed in spite of our own barricades.
Buy it; fall in love; read the next one!

Brown's latest thriller pits the infamous Ricky Lozada, an unscrupulous killer for hire, against Wick Threadgill, a wily, disgruntled detective on leave from the force. Threadgill's former partner, Oren Wesley, lures him back with the news that Lozada-against whom Threadgill has a personal vendetta-has murdered a respected doctor. The author ups the stakes by giving Threadgill and the killer the same love interest: Dr. Rennie Newton, a no-nonsense surgeon who unwittingly attracts Lozada's obsessive attention while serving on a jury that acquits him for murder. Newton's secret past raises doubts about where exactly her loyalties lie, and Brown deftly builds suspense around the romantic aspect of her story. She also scores points for her insight into the sociopath's mind, despite a rather facile explanation of how he went bad. (Not everyone with a handicapped younger sibling who gets all the parents' attention ends up a ruthless killer.) Similarly, the underlying reason for Dr. Newton's startling transformation from a young adult who lived on the wild side to a cold, controlled professional is too pat. Worst of all, Brown's prose seems aimed at an audience of eighth-graders, padded throughout with a slew of adjectives, useless descriptions and catch phrases ("Is that your final answer?"). But once things get rolling, the plot crackles with tension moving toward the final showdown between Lozada and Wick. Brown fans will not be disappointed.

When a colleague is killed, Dr. Rennie Newton is shocked to find out it was a deliberate precision killing. Gossip starts to fly when it is disclosed that she and the deceased doctor were in line for the same job and fought often. Rennie's situation gets a lot worse when she finds out the man suspected of the recent death is none other than Ricky Lozada. She recently served on the jury at his trial.

Wick Threadgill is on leave from the Fort Worth police force. He has been accused of losing perspective after the death of his brother Joe. It is assumed that Ricky also committed this murder. His partner Oren has asked him to come and discretely watch Rennie because Oren is convinced she is the key to finding Ricky.

Wick determines early on that Rennie is innocent. As he gets closer to her, they find themselves unable to deny the attraction between them. When Wick realizes that Ricky has an attachment to Rennie, he will do anything to protect her.

This is one of my favorite books by SB. Ricky is one of the creepiest killers I have ever read. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I also liked Rennie and Wick. They had chemistry overload!

Keeps You in Suspense All the Way Through!

This is the first time I have read Sandra Brown's books, and I really enjoyed this one.
In The Crush, Dr. Rennie Newton, was an exacting, and impersonal surgeon. Bought this book twice

My three year old grandson dropped The crush in the bathtub ad there was no way I was going to leave the second half of this page turner unfinished.
Ricky Roy Lozada is a serial killer who enjoys his work after a lifetime of hating his parents, his only brother, his classmates, etc. Dr. Rennie Newton is a good surgeon who endured jury duty out of a sense of responsiblity and ended up on the jury of a trial that acquited Lozada of murder. Wick is a burned out ex-cop trying to come to grips with the death of his brother and trying to find a way to eventually "stop" Lozada.
Oren Wesley is the cop who is trying to tie the current case together.
When Dr. Newton's colleague is killed, Lozada contacts her and initiates what he thinks will become an intimate relationship. The Crush is a story of a stalker, a woman with a lot of baggage in her past, and a couple of good cops who are trying hard to work together. The characters are well developed and the writing keeps the suspense going to the surprise ending. Wick and Rennie Newton are an unlikely couple, but of course they get together. It would be great to see them back in another book.

Engrossing ...

I love quilting books (or books with quilting themes in it). I love Emilie Richard's books simply because she is a thorough writer and she always introduces a new character from a previous book, so you feel like you are among friends. Her books has a way of drawing you into the story ~~ or in this case, a story within a story.

It starts out with Kendra almost losing her life in an attempted carjacking attack. Six months later after extensive therapy, she decides that she needs to go and live in her husband's grandmother's cabin. She takes Isaac's quilt, called The Lover's Knot ~~ with her as well. Isaac remains behind in Washington D.C., and Kendra fearing the end of her marriage, decides to recuperate away from the city and in the mountains. Little did she know that she would find a new home among the citizens that live in the tiny town. And little did she know that she would discover Isaac's grandmother's deep secret.

Isaac was given up for adoption as a child. He didn't have an easy childhood as his adoptive father was mentally abusive. So he didn't want to know anything about his biological family because he thought they were just as bad for giving him up for adoption. Turns out his grandmother Leah had a story and that story haunted two of her friends for years. It talked about being relocated from their home which has been turned over to the government to make a park. It gives a bit of history as well and Leah shares her stories through letters.

It's a bittersweet novel and a very wonderful one. Kendra and Isaac find themselves through history and simple daily life in the country. It's a big contrast to the high-power living in a big city ~~ and very relaxing.

Only Richards can write like this ~~ full of warmth and sunshine and hope. Her novels have always made me curl up on the couch and relax with a cup of tea on hand. It's wonderful, cozy and engrossing. Always.

------Fascinating history woven into a memorable story------

LOVER'S KNOT is the third book in the Shenandoah Album stories and, for me the best book in this series. The beginning of the story takes place in Washington, D.C. and then eventually moves on to Tom`s Brook, VA. I know these areas pretty well. So, reading this story brought many familiar images to mind.

Kendra Taylor, is a successful writer who lives with her husband in Washington, D. C. One evening on a trip to the pharmacy, she's mugged and shot twice. Recovery is made even more difficult because in some ways, she blames her husband, Isaac, for not being there when she needed him. Since they own a small cabin in Tom's Brook, Virginia, she goes there to be alone. She needs to recuperate and also to decide if she will stay in the marriage. Isaac had actually inherited the cabin and an old quilt from his natural grandmother, who he never knew, because he had been given up for adoption as a baby. He has a lot of mixed feelings about families since his adoption experience was not a happy one and he does not want his wife staying in the isolated cabin and searching back in his past.

As Kendra recuperates, she becomes more and more interested in the lady who had owned and lived in the cabin. She also wants to know more about the old quilt. and why it was left to Isaac. Meeting people from the community, she begins to learn about Isaac's real family and their history. The story also takes the reader into the history of Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This is a well done and for me, touching story!

terrific family drama

In Washington DC the mugger almost killed reporter Kendra Taylor. Physically she has recovered however mentally she suffers from a form of battle fatigue syndrome as she fears every shadow. Needing time to heal from the trauma, she leaves the capital for remote the rustic cabin once occupied by the grandmother of her husband Isaac.

Kendra uses her time away also as a chance to determine whether she wants to remain married to Isaac. As she recovers her sense of worth, Kendra begins to restore the cabin and think deeply about her relationship with Isaac whom she knows she still loves at the same time she investigates a lovingly made quilt left to Isaac that though created years ago might provide answers to the confused reporter.

LOVER'S KNOT is an intriguing character study that focuses deeply on the aftermath of a traumatic event, but through the star, readers also see the collateral damage to her loved ones. The story line is owned heart and soul by Kendra who has not mentally healed from the mugging, which in turn has her concentrate on her life including her relationship with her beloved spouse. Her investigation and subsequent findings re the quilt enhance a terrific family drama, past and present, filtered through the frightened emotionally scarred heroine.

Some may find it unbelievable that a 20-year-old Oregon woman could be enslaved by a sexual sadist for seven years--that even after being able to move freely during the day, she would allow him to lock her into a wooden box every night. Perhaps it's a minor failing of this book that the authors do not elaborate on the psychology that made her such a "perfect victim." In other respects, though, the story is well told, with an impressive accumulation of details: the woman's capture, the tortures she endured, the brainwashing techniques, the fiendish contraptions her captor constructed, the slave contract he made her sign, and the increasingly strained relations within the peculiar family that included master, slave, wife, and child, all inside a single-wide trailer. As well-known attorney and author Vincent Bugliosi writes, "A gripping and disturbing story of the secret life of apparently normal people. At once, horrific and engrossing."

Although outwardly an average young couple, Cameron Hooker, a mild-mannered mill worker who excelled at do-it-yourself projects, and Janice, his submissive wife, kidnapped 20-year-old Colleen Stan in 1977 and literally enslaved her for seven yearsmuch of that time she spent in a coffin-like box beneath the couple's waterbed. Hooker's perversions coupled with both women's submissiveness is reminiscent of Pauline Reage's The Story of O (1965). Written by the prosecutor of the People v. Hooker, who is prompted to question her relationship with her own husband, this book lacks the careful insights of Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry's Helter Skelter (1974). Colleen Stan who?

When I was browsing through the True Crime section at my local bookstore, I asked my sister to help me narrow down my choices: a Jeffrey Dahmer piece, the BTK Killer book, or one about a girl kept in a coffin beneath a couple's bed for over 7 years. She immediately recommended the latter.

And she was right--to a point. The subject is disturbingly fascinating for a True Crime novel about a victim who isn't murdered. How could they keep this young woman so carefully hidden away for so long? It seems outlandish, but the more you uncover, the more you realize that it IS feasible, and it's absolutely horrifying to imagine what Colleen Stan went through.

But the book is written by the DA who prosecuted her captor, and it shows.

We learned virtually nothing about what makes Cameron Hooker tick. Almost nothing is revealed about Colleen's past. And Janice Hooker, the most in-depth study, is more an accomplice/side victim than anything else.

But we learned all about the DA's marital problems, the vacation to reconcile her marriage, the eventual divorce, how cute her daughter is, how much she loves children, and virtually her every reaction to minute things--when all those small details should have been put into Colleen's story.

I could have enjoyed this so much more, but honestly--why should I care about the DA's personal problems? I read this book to learn about the crime, the victim, the captor, the associates. I didn't read it to hear about the author's personal issues throughout the trial.

Snip out those details, and this book would have gotten 1.5 stars more, if I could.

awesome read !

This book has been around for a few years now. I first read it about six years ago and have since read it again. It's just as good the second time round. A very shocking story of sex,brainwashing and sick perversions. Not for the easily disturbed. Very graphic details and very shocking in places. On reading the back of the book I almost laughed at the idea of someone being held captive for seven years and being brainwashed into staying. On reading the book however,you come to realise just how this can happen and how frighteningly real it was for the poor victim, Colleen Stan. All the way through I couldn't help but wonder why on earth Colleen's family didn't suss out that something was going on. I mean, hey, your daughter suddenly goes missing and when she finally turns up she is like a different person and totally controlled by two individuals that she normally wouldn't associate with. Surely someone must have thought that something was up? Really excellent read. Buy it,don't borrow it as you'll definitely want to read it again.Comes with quite a few photos too. Powerfull and compelling.

Good book, though I don't like the author or the Dugard comparison

Cameron Hooker appeared to the outside world as a quiet, hard-working, mild-mannered young man with a nice, quiet wife. But inside, Cameron was driven by sadistic fantasies of having a dungeon of female slaves totally under his control, to torture, have sex with, and order about as he wished. Cameron put many hours into studying up on psychological dominance and constructing appropriate places and devices to keep and torture a slave, before he put his plan into action to actually grab one. His mousy wife, not wanting to be tortured herself and not wanting to lose her husband, went along with the plan. Cameron's first attempt was a failure in that he went too far and actually killed his victim. His second attempt, in which he kidnapped Colleen Stan, was more successful in that he managed to keep her around for years, after breaking her psychologically through torture, deprivation and isolation. As part of his coercion, he showed her an official-looking "slave contract" saying that if she escaped, she would be hunted down and killed by a national network of slave masters, and her loved ones would also be killed.

Colleen Stan was fortunate in that she managed to survive Cameron's tortures, including being hung by her arms for extended periods, burned, electrically shocked, and kept in a coffinlike box under the Hooker's bed in a sweltering trailer for several days with almost no water. Eventually she was able to forge a bond with Cameron's neglected and fearful wife, who helped her escape and also helped the authorities bring Cameron to justice. Colleen was not so fortunate in that the prosecutor in her case, Christine McGuire, apparently wrote this book about her experiences and did not share the profits with Colleen, which is pretty sleazy in my opinion. The book delves into a bit of McGuire's private life and frankly, even before I heard about her running off with the profits of Colleen's story, she came off like an unstable, egomaniacal person. I am just glad she didn't somehow mess up Colleen's case and let Cameron go free.

Colleen is also unfortunate in that many people who read this book will not understand how psychological control, threats and physical torture can break a person's spirit to the point where they do not try to run away when given the chance. Everybody always thinks they will run away if put in that situation, but the truth is that we don't know what we will really do until we're the victim. It's clear that Cameron Hooker did his homework; he paid attention to and enjoyed all the painstaking details of torturing and breaking a woman. Perhaps Colleen was a bit less assertive than many other women, but at the same time, when you have been tortured for days it would seem like it's pretty easy to believe that you might be hunted down and killed if you try to run away in an unfamiliar area. And of course, there is the well-documented phenomenon of "Stockholm syndrome." In short, there are many reasons why a kidnap/ torture victim might not try to escape, and this book provides an excellent exploration of many of them.

Although this is a worthwhile book to read, I don't like the comparison to Jaycee Dugard being made in the advertising of this book. First of all, Colleen Stan was not a snatched child like Jaycee Dugard (or Elizabeth Smart or other child sex-slave kidnap victims). Colleen was a young adult hitch-hiker in her early 20s when she was taken, although her personality seems to have been shy and perhaps child-like in some ways. Second, the events in this book took place, and the book was written, many years before Jaycee Dugard's case entered the public eye, and it seems grossly exploitative to use Jaycee's name to try and sell additional copies of this book. Because of that exploitation and the situation with the prosecutor, I cannot recommend that people buy this book new and put money in corrupt pockets. It's a good read, though, so buy a used copy like I did.

Denslow's exceedingly odd line drawings for the original editions of Baum's Oz series. Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Kindle edition

One summer day in 1937, my sister and I took a trip to Oz. Unlike Dorothy, we didn't have a cyclone, we had to roller skate a mile to the library. I was ten, my sister seven. The effort was worth it. We discovered L. Frank Baum's many Oz books and spent hours at a time in Oz. It is one of my most cherished memories from childhood.

Alan Pearce's Kindle Edition of Baum's original 1899 book is beautifully done, and very faithful to the book. It's also a real eye-opener when compared with the MGM movie. Baum had four people greet Dorothy, three Munchkin men and the Witch of the North. MGM's myriad Munchkins were little people gathered from all over the world. Dorothy's "ruby slippers" in the movie were silver in the book. Admitedly, these are nit-picking examples, simply to show how MGM messed up the book. Only someone who has seen the movie, and now reads the book, will notice the major differences.

This is the most beautiful e-book I have ever seen! If you decide to read it, please do it justice. Black and white will kill the many original illustrations. They really need a larger color image than given by an ipod or cell phone. I do all my primary reading on Kindle for PC, and only use a Kindle for reading in bed or when away from home. Amazon's Kindle for PC is free and easy to install.

A World of Magical Creatures

I do not have one of the anthologies of all the Oz books, just a simple Sterling Classics edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I was visiting Syracuse and Fayetteville, NY, and took a tour of the home of 19th century feminist Matilda Joslyn Gage, and became entangled in the wonderful world of L. Frank Baum as a result. Baum was married to Gage's daughter Maud. I bought a copy of this book there, and upon arrival home read an excellent biography of Baum, which filled me in on details of this extraordinary American writer.

As an 11-year-old I was enchanted with the 1939 movie. I saw it four times and cajoled the neighbor kids to act it out with me, always casting myself as the Scarecrow. Judy Garland and that beautiful song still haunt me--but I have to say the movie really does not capture the magic of the book. Baum's fertile and whimsical mind created a truly original world of animals and humanoids interacting, sharing, helping, and sometimes hindering each other, but, with perseverance and pluck we know that the best of them will prevail. They are all more three-dimensional than their movie counterparts, and their love spills out to one another, making them more real to the reader than the characters in grittier, more realistic works. The writing is charming without ever cloying, as if a nice uncle was taking the time to relate a story of a place and a people that only he knew.

My daughter never liked the movie much, but I think she's going to enjoy the book, which I plan to give her now that I've finished. She's 50 years old now, and I think she's ready for it.

Simply Enchanting

Who can say this story was not part of their childhood, whether via the book or the most amazing film ever made? I read the book long after seeing the movie (they played it yearly at Thanksgiving time for some reason when I was young), and I was eager to read the original story. Suffice to say, I was enchanted. While it differed from the film, I still found the characters endearing and the realm of Oz amazing. Baum's humor and his obvious enjoyment in entertaining children are what make this story so much fun.

A wonderful, imaginative treasure to share with your children or just to read and re-read to take you back to a time when you really wondered if scarecrows could talk to you or monkeys could fly.
