Victorian Era - England

Fifth Earl Lord Dunsford is brutally murdered during a leisurely weekend gathering at his country home. Although it turns out that almost all his aristocratic guests had motives to kill him, it is a young maid, Elsie, who is charged with the crime. She had publicly threatened the Earl's life and later was found burying a bloody knife. Dr. Alexandra Gladstone is the only voice of opposition to this conclusion. She sees at once that the true cause of death was strangulation, not the knife wound that occurred after his death, and is determined to save Elsie from hanging by uncovering the real murderer.

Alexandra Gladstone is a country surgeon, trained by her now deceased respected physician father. A recurring theme in the story is the approbation of her peers for her choice of a profession deemed suitable only for men. Nonetheless, Alexander has earned the respect of the working class folks she serves which often gives her access to helpful bits of village gossip.

The book is slight on historical information beyond fascinating details of Victorian medicine and medical practices, and the lamentable situation of the poor who often have to ignore the doctor's advice in order to get on with their lives. Antagonism between the classes is important to the plot as is the portrayal of the upper class who hide their deceptions and misdeeds behind their privileged position. Further stories in the series explore the place of women in Victorian society and how the family and mental illness was perceived under English law in this period.

Readers will like and admire Alexander Gladstone who deeply feels for her patients and whose restrained character seems true to how someone of her position would present herself. We also meet her maid Nancy, large dog Zack, and barrister friend and alley Nicholas Forsythe.This is the first of a series of three Dr. Gladstone stories. No historical background provided.

While attending a dinner, Elsie, a young kitchen maid runs into the dining room ranting and waving a kitchen knife. She blames Lord of Dunford for killing her lover, George. The next morning, the Lord is found dead and Elsie is to blame.

While investigating the death, Alexandra gets a note to meet Quince, the leader of a bunch of ruffians. The note says she is to meet him at the pier after dark. Quince is there waiting for her but soon after see arrives, someone jumps them and Alexandra’s dog, Zack is injured. The following morning, two boys arrive at the surgery in need of medical attention for dog bites. Alexandra knows the boys are the same ones involved in the scuffle the night before. She believes they know something that would put them in danger.

The day of Elsie’s trial arrives and the murderer still has not be identified. Time is running out for Alexandra to figure it out. This is the first book in the Alexandra Gladstone mystery series. I enjoy the author’s writing style. Several times, I thought I knew who did it only to find out I was wrong.

Paula Paul's SYMPTOMS OF DEATH is a great read, start to finish. Ms. Paul weaves a story that is both exciting and interesting, taking the reader to a nineteenth century English seaside village in a storyline that will make Downton Abbey fans feel right at home. You'll fall in love the sleuth, Dr. Alexandra Gladstone, the village's doctor, who works diligently and against all odds to solve the murder -- just as she had to overcome so many odds to become a medical doctor in Victorian England.

You will not only enjoy the story, which is a true page turner, but you're going to appreciate the writing, too. Ms. Paul offers beautiful writing with a subtle, sophisticated humor that testify to her keen insight into the human condition. Her characters are timeless, coming alive in dialogue that invites you into their lives and the moment they inhabit in history.

I give this novel my highest recommendation. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I downloaded the next novel in this series (AN IMPROPER DEATH) even before I finish the first!

Great book with lots of useful gardening information!

I like this book alot. This book has a ton of useful information in it. It has detailed information about selecting the right containers, seeds starting, crop rotation, and many other topics that I found very helpful. One of my favorite chapters - lists the best plants for new or busy gardeners. This is a great list because lets face it-not many of us have a ton of time to devote to gardening. This is especially useful to new gardeners who want easy to grow plants while learning to garden. The author even has a chapter discussing bringing plants indoors.

This is a very well written ebook. It is easy to read and easy to navigate with the Table of Contents in front with links for each chapter. All in all this is a great book packed full of really good garden information. I am experienced organic gardener and have found this book very useful and handy to have on my Kindle. This was money well spent! :0)

Poorly Done

The information contained in this book can be found elsewhere. This book is for a rank novice who has never planted a seed - then you might find something useful. However, there are more knowledgeable people out there. This author totally blew it when she said that hybrids are dangerous and put them in the same category as GMO's. Hybrids are NOT GMO's. Hybrids are plants that man has made through the use of pollen or other NATURAL methods, not by splicing genes. Since the author obviously doesn't know this, it is difficult to trust in anything she says. Just pass on this book - there are much, much better beginning gardening books available.
