Unique
By Joelle
This book stands out from any other m/m fiction (including historical) I have read. The taboo of the same-sex relationship is given little time; this is first and foremost about a deep and abiding love that begins during the horrific years of WWI (or the Great War, as Edmund and David would have called it).

The book rang true, being written in a simple, straightforward style. While there were some graphic depictions of the protagonists' sexual activity, they were not gratuitous and seemed intended more to illustrate how innocent both men were to the mechanics involved, if not the emotions. The story takes its time (after the initial "insta-love" both men feel within days of meeting, which was clearly a necessary plot device to work with the limited time they had aboard the ship on which they met) and if one knows the history of the Lusitania, there is a sense of foreboding that permeates their voyage. The pace works well, especially against the backdrop of the tragically eventful time period.

The last feature of the book that I feel warrants mention is the interesting use of religious faith throughout the book. I would not call this a Christian book per se, as there is no sense of proselytizing; rather, as one of the men is a divinity student turned chaplain, it shows his ability to come to terms, with mercifully short-lived angst, with his love being taboo to his faith. That his faith is strong enough for him to make peace with himself and continue to believe and find comfort in it, as well as use it to help the soldiers in the trenches, is refreshing. By avoiding the easiest plotline of loss of faith, the book feels even more genuine, and is in keeping with the overall quaint sweetness that permeates this unique historical novel. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

Loved The Historical Detail! (Minor Spoilers Included)
By Book Lover
Although I'm not usually a fan of "insta-love" story lines, I'm a sucker for a hurt-comfort story (although in this case, the hurt was more of a slight physical handicap than an actual injury). So the two premises balanced out in a nice way for me. I really enjoyed how David and Edmund's characters were written -- especially David's kind-hearted, giving nature. Together, their love story was so beautifully unveiled and the rich historical detail really helped to bring the book's settings to life (Several times, I even find myself Googling it's historical references).

But, as much as I really liked this story, there were two things I didn't really care for. 1.) I don't really like when stories like this take place over a very long time because I find it very hard to believe that the characters would wait that long to reunite -- especially while remaining faithful/celibate. I also like ending the story at happy point where I can just IMAGINE what happened after that, rather being TOLD what happened as they grew older. 2.) Despite all of the lush details and a wonderful build-up, the ending felt rushed --as if the author just ran out of steam. As a result, it felt like Mr. Enfield missed several opportunities to flesh out some of the interesting back stories that we touched on mid-way through the book, then wrapped too quickly (and with too little explanation) in the end.

In spite of the few things I didn't like about 'Kinsale', overall, I found it well worth the read (I've gone back to re-read parts of it since reading it the first time) and I'd definitely recommend it to fans of the mm genre.

What a wonderful story back in time
By BruceD
I loved this book. I truly enjoyed the mix of fiction and fact. The wonderful love story of these two wonderful souls, just made me giddy. I loved their interactions and thoughtfulness and gratitude for being so blessed with each other. The roller coaster ride I like was there, and the ending I wanted there too. No I'm not telling, you'll just have to find a cozy fire to sit by with a nice afghan and cup of tea and step back, off the old head of Kinsdale. This series is going right on my re-read shelf, where as I already purchased the other 2 books of the series before I even finished this book. Thank you.
