Starhawk (The Academy series(Priscilla Hutchins) novel Book 7), by Jack McDevitt

Priscilla Hutchins has been through many experiences.
This is the story of her first unforgettable adventure…

Priscilla “Hutch” Hutchins has finally realized her lifelong dream: She’s completed a nerve-bending qualification flight for a pilot’s license.

Her timing is far from optimal, however. Faster-than-light travel has only recently become a reality, and the World Space Authority is still learning how to manage long-range missions safely. To make matters worse, efforts to prepare two planets for colonization are killing off native life-forms, outraging people on Earth.

So there’s not a lot of demand for space pilots. Priscilla thinks her career may be over before it has begun. But her ambition won’t be denied, and soon she is on the bridge of an interstellar ship, working for the corporation that is responsible for the terraforming.

Her working conditions include bomb threats, sabotage, clashes with her employers—and a mission to a world, adrift between the stars, that harbors a life-form unlike anything humanity has ever seen. Ultimately, she will be part of a life-and-death struggle that will test both her capabilities and her character...

"Turns out maybe, we are the aliens"
By Pabkins
In Starhawk, we can see what very well may be our near future. The space race has paved the way to global cooperation in the form of a space station in orbit around earth and we are capable of interstellar space travel to worlds far beyond our own. Other planets have been discovered with life and we have made contact with other sentient races. Unfortunately, advances in technology have not given us the answers to our ever present problems of over population, pollution and dwindling natural resources. Because of this corporations have turned their eyes to other planets in the hopes that terraforming another world similar to our own will be the answer to these issues.

Priscilla's Journal
I couldn't help thinking about all those old science-fiction stories from the early years of the space age. There were always aliens showing up who wanted to kill everybody and take over the world. Turns out maybe, we are the aliens. -June 17, 2195 - pg 5

This story takes off like a shot in these first few chapters, introducing us to the two main characters Priscilla Hutchins and Captain Jake Loomis. Jake is doing a flight assessment on Priscilla to see if she is ready to be an interstellar pilot. They encounter several crisis on this test flight, one which could change the future of the space program and another which could mean life or death. When it is over neither one of them will ever be the same.

He'd been tested and found wanting. And he'd have to live with it. - pg 97

In the first 100 pages I was literally unable to put the book down I was so caught up in the tension of each scenario they were thrown into. However, things slow down considerably for the following 200 pages before they pick back up again in the last fourth of the book. I would have to say during the middle portion you see a lot about the state of the world, politics, and how society is reacting to the terraforming of another world that may kill of many of the species on that planet. There are frequent "newsdesk" snippets through the entire book, usually at the end of chapters, where you get to see news headlines. These help give you a feel of what is going on in our future world, in the same way reading all of the top headlines of today would give you a feel for all the current events. I found these to be fascinating and really helped me feel like I really was living in our future.

Starhawk is a fascinating story with exceptionally well written characters and extremely believable world building. It is very much a novel of exploration, not only of space but of your own beliefs, going after what you want in life, and fighting for what you believe in, no matter the cost. In many ways the characters Jack McDevitt writes are inspirations - true role models in their world and our own. They are what some heroes in other novels can only aspire to be. If you are a fan of science fiction, or space opera, or even if you've never read a sf novel before Starhawk would be an excellent place to start.

A fitting entry into the Academy universe.
By Michael Poole
I'm not a fan of prequels. They are usually committed after a series or character becomes popular and carries the weight of an established past recorded in the previous tales. The prequel must then tiptoe through what-we-all-know-will-come without contradicting any of it, or not, depending on the author's whim (and respect for their readers). Not all authors are up to the task, but when I heard McDevitt was writing a "Hutch" prequel I had no reservations about it at all.

Starhawk avoids the prequel problem by accepting its place within canon. This is the beginning of Hutch's career. There are no earth-shattering events or revelations that for some reason no one ever mentions again. Instead, Hutch graduates into the world of starship pilot where adventure comes in bursts of a couple of hours followed by days of just killing time.

This is not to say that nothing exciting happens. There are cosmic mysteries served up a la McDevitt: the universe is big and strange and the answers aren't always conveniently waiting in the next chapter. There are life and death situations that end the way they end, not the way you want them to. And there are characters, neither good nor bad, struggling for balance between their conscience and the expectations of job and duty.

The novel covers the period shortly before and after Hutch's certification as a pilot with about half of the book following Jake Loomis, the veteran pilot who supervised Hutch's certification flight. Loomis retires in large part due to the tragic circumstances surrounding the end of that trip, while Hutch runs face-first into a wall of bureaucracy and politics, with some eco-terrorism on the side. Hutch's and Jake's stories intersect throughout the novel ultimately leading to a climax that is much more subdued than in later novels. Nevertheless, fans of the character should have no trouble recognizing this as a critical period for Hutch.

Readers should resist the temptation to hold Starhawk up against the novels that chronologically follow. This is how it begins and McDevitt respects us enough to believe we will understand that. Hutch's big adventures are yet to come, but the not-so-big ones also matter and are often the ones that have the greatest influence on who we become. Rather than a prequel, Starhawk is best viewed as the first in series of novels, never mind that the others were written before it.

If you are a fan of McDevitt's work, you will find the same casual style that characterizes most of his writing, like a conversation with good friends. If you are a fan of the Academy novels, you get a look at its early days and the environment in which the Academy came to be the institution seen in later books. If you are a fan of Hutch, you will get to see the dawn of her career and a few key events that guide her future decisions and shape her character into the resourceful pilot we already know.

And if you've never read any of the Academy novels, this is the perfect place to start.

Boring, tedious and pathetic plot with no suspense.
By Jacob Whitehead
While I am an avid sci fi reader, I rarely write reviews. I can get beyond the typos and poor construction if it is a good story. However, with Starhawk SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME. I could barely force myself to finish reading and only managed it because I liked the Priscilla Hutchins novels. The plot is riddled with unresolved mysteries and no substance.
***Spoiler Alert***
The plot opens with a young Hutch and another character uncovering a first contact with another species that never came to light. So you think this mystery contact will be pieced together throughout the book, but no. There is barely a single mention of the incident towards the end and it is never resolved. Another example, towards the middle of the book, Hutch comes in contact with another alien species that is something resembling a global weather pattern. They send a whole team light years away to investigate and make contact; the team is snowed on and so decides to go home. Period. Nothing to see here folks. Wouldn't want to be buried in the snow and so better go home. Why would anyone want to persevere and actually make meaningful contact with a new species? The plot just keeps dragging on in that fashion. The only mysteries are mundane and not even resolved. The whole book is like a really long intro that doesn't go anywhere. There are some deaths of characters you don't really care about with the possible exception of one. There is a bit of love. There is some development of how Hutch came to be a notorious pilot. And that is it.

Definitely save your money.
