About the Author
Michael Caputo was born in the beautiful Region of Calabria, in Southern Italy, but has resided in Canada most of his life. Michael holds a BA in Psychology, a B.Ed. in Education, a Masters in Psychology and Education, and several teaching qualifications. Michael taught at the high school level for over two decades, while teaching part-time at the college level for sixteen years. Michael is the author of the award-winning book, God Seen Through the Eyes of the Greatest Minds, and Under a Lion Sun: Childhood Days of Joy and Sorrow in Old Calabria. Michael visits his beautiful Calabria regularly.

Enchanting Facts Myths And Theories

Let me begin by saying that do to stylistic concerns I had been tempted to give the book 4 stars, however on a personal level, being Calabrese, I am very comfortable giving it 5 stars because of the book's effect on me. With that caveat declared, let me say that I did find the intertwining of the story of the ancient coin which was found by the author as a child to be a bit cumbersomely intertwined with the fascinating history that he has so painfully and fascinatingly presents.
Yet when Mr. Caputo presents the history of Calabria, it is done succinctly with a fine eye toward detail and a powerful exercise in judgment. Of course the facts are there and many are not well known in point of fact little of this region's history is known and he takes us from prehistory to the present, always with the aim of understanding the Calabrian culture and character. Read this book and you will get past the few common cliches to understand the torturous path which the people have traveled and what makes them unique.
This is certainly more than a travelogue or a polemic and in reading this book you will understand the historical processes that have shaken the region more than its earthquakes. I especially like how he illustrates the difference between the effect of the Saracen occupation of Sicily, and the Saracens' "raids" into Calabria. It explains a lot both culturally and architecturally.
It is difficult to summarize the three thousand year journey in a few words and I won't try.If you want to comprehend what this region is about, if you know any Calabrese, or if you wish to get a feel for what historical processes influenced Italian history in general, this is the place to start.
A rewarding book to read for anyone to read especially for tourists who visit Florence and see signs posted on restaurants which shall remain nameless that read in Italian "No Calabrese, or even worse "Terrone," permitted." Now you get the whole story.

Great review of Calabrian history

An invaluable resource which is easy to read for those English speakers who want to know more about a little known region of Italy.
The history of Calabria was always something I'd wondered about but was it difficult to find an English version of it in a nutshell. Although the author, Michael Caputo wrote about his own roots, much of what he wrote applies to all Calabrians from the same province, Vibo Valentia.
He also provided several quotes from various historical texts throughout the book so one can refer to them if one wishes to probe further into the history of Calabria and do one's own research.

The factual and historical information is compelling, with lulls in between. The writing itself would have benefited from the help of an editor to weed out the frequent misspellings and grammatical errors.
The book is especially interesting and informative to anyone of Central Calabrian descent, or interested in the multi-layered cultural histories of the Mediterranean and Calabria in particular (into both of which categories I include myself).
