GOOD MOTHER, BAD DAUGHTER? by Author Martha Penn
This is a well-written and insightful book on a very difficult topic....an emotional abusive mother/daughter relationship. "Good Mother, Bad Daughter?" is chock full of personal experiences by the daughter of a mother that eats away at her self-esteem and self-image which leaves lasting emotional scars. Author Martha Penn does a fine job of giving examples of abusive situations as well as a thorough description of a narcissistic personality and the unbecoming traits it may entail. According to this author, daughters of emotionally abusive mothers "are so keen to please" and they can easily lose sight of meeting their own needs in life. She stresses that this may be a hard goal to achieve as the emotionally abusive mother can be insatiable when it comes to having her needs met and is seldom pleased with what the daughter is offering.
In this book, Author Martha Penn is open and honest about her abusive relationship with her mother as well as the love/hate nature of her feelings toward her. I agree with her sound advice at the end of the book..."Don't let your abusive mother's legacy live on; you have a chance to turn the bad into the good. You know what it is like to be on the receiving end of the cruelty and so give your children all the love and affection you missed out on". In my opinion, we have the opportunity to 'not let' history repeat itself and this is what we should strive for in our roles as mothers.

A deeply personal story

This book is penned as guide to help people who have had emotionally abusive mothers. The book was both insightful and moving. The author provides her own personal account of living with an emotionally abusive mother and how this affected her own self esteem and views on the world. Through the author's account of her struggle, the reader is able to learn form her and learn to heal themselves. The book offers lots of advice on regaining your self worth and protecting yourself from an abusive mother. Much of the information given can also be extrapolated to other abusive relationships and this is helpful because people with abuse parents will often subconsciously get into abusive personal relationships. I recommend this book to anyone who has had or is in an abusive relationship.

Very good book about the authors experience with a narcissistic mother. I can relate. Her suggestions are important and her experience is vital to someone like me who has thought I was the one that was crazy.
