Invisible, by Cecily Anne Paterson

Jazmine Crawford doesn’t make decisions. She doesn’t make choices. She doesn’t make friends. Jazmine Crawford only wants one thing: to be invisible. For Jazmine, it’s a lot easier to take out her hearing aid and drift along pretending that nothing’s wrong than it is to admit that she’s heartbroken about her dad dying. She’s been drifting and ignoring her over-worried mum for four years now.

When bad girl Shalini and her mates adopt Jazmine, she quickly finds herself involved in more than she can handle. Sitting in disgrace in the principal’s office, Jazmine is offered a choice: help drama teacher Miss Fraser in the upcoming production of The Secret Garden or face a four week suspension.
It’s Miss Fraser who clinches the decision. “I believe in you Jazmine,” she says. “I know you can do this.” And Jazmine, terrified, disbelieving and elated all at the same time, joins the play.

For a while it’s all good. Drama star and chocolate lover Liam is friendly and Jazmine realises that having a romance, making friends, talking to her mother and feeling her emotions isn’t as scary as she thought. In a final happy twist of fate, acting diva Angela quits the play and with only a week to go, Miss Fraser asks Jazmine to take on the main role of Mary.

But then Shalini returns from her suspension. She’s out for payback, and she has just the ammunition she needs to force Jazmine to quit the play and go back to her old ways.

Will Jazmine be confident enough to stand up for herself against Shalini? Will Liam still like her if he finds out who she really is? And does she have the strength to face the truth about what really happened to her dad?

Review
In this exquisitely written story, 12-year-old Jazmine, who has some hearing loss, is drifting in a self-imposed isolation after the sudden death of her father. Problems at school lead her to working on a production of "The Secret Garden" with an understanding teacher. So far this is a standard plot. Then, Jazmine begins to blossom and make new friends. But the author works within the trope to examine Jazmine as she blunders toward a better life. The writing and pacing are tight, the secondary characters well drawn. The metaphor of deafness as alienation is not overstated. There are also twists that save the story from being mawkish. The garden Jazmine plants dies in an early frost. The bully does not have a tragic reason for being cruel. For those going through teenage angst or those who remember it well, this book explores the fear and confusion beautifully, with a touch of dry humor. Jazmine is not only passing from miserable isolation to happy participation; she is also developing the empathy that comes from paying attention to more than her own misery. This could have been trite and preachy, but the author skillfully turned it into a stunning account of the reinvention of a compelling and sympathetic character.- Publishers Weekly

About the Author
Cecily Paterson believes that housework should be banned so that she can have more time to write. Also gardening, cooking and other things that take up valuable time. She lives in Australia with her husband, four children and slightly overweight dog after a childhood spent as a 'Third Culture Kid' in Pakistan. Cecily went to boarding school at the age of 11 so she knows how it feels to be miserable. And happy. Or both at the same time. She writes realistic fiction for young teens.

A must read for all ages.
By Sgerstenberger
This is a very well written story that took me back (over 30 years) to the feelings and insecurities of growing up. I was rooting for Jazmine from the beginning and thoroughly enjoyed being part of her journey. I recommend this book no matter what age you are.

Wonderful!
By JulieS
Wonderful, simply wonderful. The book is a quick read and the author captures the voice of an adolescent girl perfectly. I also liked how the story mirrored themes from A Secret Garden (which is kind of a sub-plot of the main narrative).
