Should have used the current version of SharePoint

This book is not bad. It's organized well and the examples are real world relevant. I was disappointed though. I thought I was getting a book for SharePoint 2013 and it's not. It's written using Pre-release SharePoint 2013. There are enough major differences to make the book ineffective in many areas. Microsoft removed some site templates, library, and list templates in the release version. But they're in the book. This is a waste. The book could have gone more in-depth on other things instead of focusing on areas of SharePoint that are no longer available. The home page looks different in release than it does in pre-release. There are many differences.
Also, this book is call Building Business Solutions. I realize it says "Beginning" but I thought the book would contain more information about building actual business solutions using Dashboards and the Business Intelligence features that play a major role in SharePoint.
Would I buy it again? No. It doesn't provide what I'm looking for since I need a current product and not an old product. But if you are just looking to learn more about what SharePoint is it is an excellent tool.

Extremely useful to both SharePoint newcomers and experienced practitioners

I was fortunate enough to come by a copy of this book during a Rackspace give-away at a recent SPTechCon event (a SharePoint industry conference), and I've been reading the book from cover to cover when I find the time. Although I've been focused on SharePoint myself for many years, I'd secretly been hoping to obtain a copy of this book.
Why was I hoping to obtain a copy? Well, I focus primarily on SharePoint development and infrastructure. I spend most of my days looking at SharePoint's plumbing - not the pretty UI and business functionality that the average end-user sees. I can navigate a SharePoint site collection relatively well, but truth be told, my knowledge of SharePoint's out-of-the-box (OOTB) capabilities was weaker than I'd liked. With the recent arrival of SharePoint 2013 and a whole host of new built-in capabilities, I needed a crash course on the ins and outs of end-user capabilities within the platform.
I know a couple of the book's authors, so my expectations going in were reasonably high. I've read about 75% of the book thus far, and I can honestly say that I haven't been disappointed. In terms of learning, I'm picking up everything I'd hoped to and more.
The book starts off with just the basics: lists and libraries, views, workflows, etc. It moves from there to talk about site columns, content types, permissions, and other structural mechanisms. It then builds further to talk about Visio Services, SQL Server Reporting Services integration, and other more "advanced" end-user topics. Each of the chapters contains walk-throughs and illustrative examples to help describe the topic at hand, and together they work to build a solid foundation and understanding.
If you are an end-user or wannabe power-user who is new to SharePoint, this book is an excellent way to become productive with SharePoint in relatively short order. If you are an experienced user (or someone who focuses on other concerns within/surrounding SharePoint), the broad coverage and style of this book promote a "pick it up and read what you need" approach to consumption. I can say that the contents have already been a help to me on a couple of recent client engagements, and I have no doubts that I'll keep this book nearby for future reference.

Good Overview and Explanations of SharePoint 2013

I love the tutorials and examples this book walks you through. It is written well, is thorough, and really works for me. The only challenge I've come across is that many of the screen shots and step by step guides do not match the version of SharePoint I am using. I assume it's due to the book being written from a pre-release.
