Follow this advice

I read this book and it explained why the 8 Hour Diet didn't work. It didn't work for me. This book refers you to a book by Pilon and his form of fasting has worked the best for me. Easy to follow and easy to adopt as a lifestyle change. It is the first "diet" plan that I can actually continue for the rest of my life. I don't feel deprived and I continue to lose weight at a steady pace.

I would never have know about Pilon's book if it wasn't for this book. I owe a great debt of thanks to Girard for challenging the 8 Hour Diet's misuse of the research and setting the research on fasting straight.

Read it - then follow his advice.

Poorly written. Oversimplified. Repetitive. Seem like anyone could have written this, just another opinion about the diet and there are plenty out there.

I was going to purchase the 8 hour diet and decided to borrow this book first. I do believe that giving the public the idea that you can eat whatever you want for eight hours and lose weight is a marketing ploy. I think this author brings you back to the basic fact that there are no free rides. The 8 hour diet may work if you make sure you make healthy choices.

Don't waste your money. Short, full of cliches, trite, and just a chance for the "author" to attempt to blow his own horn. No research, no facts, just cliches and the same stuff your mother always told you.

Skeptical but surprising

This book opens with a powerful realization that made me immediately question my ability to be engaging: How can I make people like me if my attention is usually focused on my cell phone? I didn't think I would be hit with the idea that I NEEDED to read this book that quickly. But technological advances are affecting people's social abilities, including my own. I shamefully have to admit I have been guilty of paying too much attention to a screen and not enough attention to the person right in front of me. That's not exactly the most comfortable thing to confess... However, it did compel me to keep reading. It also compelled me to finish the book quite quickly and leave a review so others might see how helpful this material can be for them!

If you're looking to read about networking, or dating, or making and maintaining friendships with a present and approachable attitude that makes people want to converse with you, and regularly, this book is it. It is full of exercises that are extremely doable in pretty much any social setting. The exercises would be effective for all social interactions; whether you're looking to be more engaging in the dating scene, or during networking functions, or in your friendships- "How to Be the Most Engaging Person..." is full of effective strategies to create a more winning version of yourself.

I especially enjoyed that the author started with exercises that I wouldn't have considered because of their simplicity. For example, he stresses the importance of eye contact, which I would have figured to be a no-brainer! Likewise, the emphasis on listening seemed unnecessary until I considered his elaborations and acknowledged times in my life where I would meet a new friend and I found myself waiting to speak rather than completely hearing out this person's story. Again, I guiltily accepted that this book held more for me than I wanted to admit.

As a woman, I found the section on active listening and ways to amp it up to be the most exciting. I definitely think I will apply those ideas when I am working on how to network in a more engaging fashion. It's weird, but I also think this book could help you understand not only how to be more engaging and charming and charismatic, but I also think this book provides examples of how to be nice when encountering both new and old acquaintances alike.

My favorite section would be the last section- I found it to be the most enlightening (I won't go into any more detail; you should buy the book!). The idea that I can "be engaging by being engaged" really hit home... I just have to practice being involved and present in all future social settings.

I left the book 4 stars for a few reasons. The author doesn't really touch on body language at all after the section about eye contact and I think that it is a HUGE factor in being more engaging. So there's that. I also kind of wish there had been a few more exercises introduced (especially Intermediate and Advanced exercises!) so that I could implement them in my encounters. Lastly, in some ways, in some of the sections, like the one about emotional talk, I felt like the content was geared a little more toward men than toward women... But it might just be because I already know all about being emotional! :)

Despite all that, this book is an excellent, easy read for anyone looking to be a more engaging version of him/herself, in a very genuine way.

I’m a self-published writer of romance set on worlds that live only in my mind. If you think it can't happen, well, I do my best to prove you wrong. Physics? Yeah, not in my world. My traveling companions are Mija, a rescued hound of unknown mixed heritage, and a rose point Siamese named Kiko who delights in tormenting both Mija and me when we'd rather be relaxing or sleeping. At the age of 53, having raised all of my children to adulthood - some of them kicking and screaming the entire way - I've decided to do whatever makes me happy. Currently, that happiness is found in writing, visiting and spoiling grandchildren, and making sure my kids have frequent headaches wondering what I'll do next. I loved reading every word of this book. The author does an amazing job at pulling you into the character's lives. I couldn't get enough of Zorall and Shi'an. I loved their connection to each other. Adding in Bod took the heat off of things and add a little humor to the story. I look forward to reading future works from this author. This will definitely go on my favorites list.

Newman creates an amazingly detailed world and well-developed characters in this epic fantasy. Of course, the tables are turned from traditional fantasy as the story centers around a world controlled by women and a kingdom that wants to give men equal rights. If you love fantasies, but are looking for a unique spin, Love's Mistress is a delightful read.

Single recipe, step by step

This is a cookbook for the true and complete novice.

It features a single recipe, which didn't really sink in on me until I looked for the non existent table of contents. I suppose it is logical it doesn't have one, after all, it's how to make ONE kind of truffles.

The directions are clear and there are photos for each step. Super simple, but then again, truffles aren't the most complicated of candies to make. For me, it was excessive--I didn't need directions that plodding, nor did I need a whole "book" for a single recipe.

Don't misunderstand me though. Just like a college grad isn't going to be impressed with a primer reading book, that doesn't mean there isn't a place for a book like this. We all had to learn sometime, and this does take a lot of the trial and error of cooking out with the clear instructions. This is ideal for the novice. I'm just not that novice anymore, and I found it somewhat tedious and uninteresting. I can think of some people that would find this book very interesting, if they were to decide to make truffles.

Nice small-yield recipe. Suitable for both US and UK

This recipe sounds terrific, and it's on my to-try list. It makes just a few truffles (I forget if it's 6 or 8), and it seems to me that the recipe is suitable for use in both US and UK (but I'm NO expert on UK cooking). I did find myself wishing for a standard recipe along with the photo one, and there was a bit of confusion when graham crackers were switched to being called "cookies." Still, a nice little recipe.

WORLD WITHOUT END: PAGES WITHOUT END

Having done so much complaining, lately, about how no one is reading anymore, let alone reading anything lengthy, because of increasingly short attention spans, I figured it was time I put my money where my mouth was, and I sat down to read the 1016-page WORLD WITHOUT END by Ken Follett, remembering what a jolly-good time I had reading his equally long THE PILLARS OF THE KINGDOM (to which this book is a kind of sequel). And, while I have to admit that I’ve never really enjoyed any of Mr. Follett’s books quite as much as I did his spy-thriller EYE OF THE NEEDLE, this book certainly proved to provide more, by way of history, plot line, and depth of place and characterization, than most of the shorter readings, by other authors, that I’ve managed lately.

Granted, I did, more than once, get a tad confused by the plethora of characters — serfs, knights, earls, monks, nuns, and the like. Granted, more than once, I got confused by the timeline, needing to thumb back through the pages to find out what year I was suddenly in, and how it related to the year I was in at the end of the chapter before. Granted, I often thought the bad guys were getting away with a helluva lot, while the good guys were always getting dumped on. Granted, one big mystery at the beginning of the book petered out, by book’s end, to be genuinely (duh!) anticlimactic.

On the other hand, a novel on this grand a scale was continually surprising me with plot twists and turns that kept me interestedly page-turning until the very end. And, I suspect, it will do the very same for anyone else who’ll take the time to sit down and make the same effort to give it a leisurely read-through.

While, in the end, WORLD WITHOUT END, at times seemingly pages without end, wasn’t my favorite read of all time, I’m more than happy to say I read it through to the end. Likely, you’ll end up happy to say that, too!

Naval SF is the common theme in this solid collection consisting of a short novel, Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington, and three stories, all set in the same universe that Weber (Ashes of Victory) created for his popular series heroine, Honor Harrington. In the novel, Honor is now a midshipman in the Royal Manticoran navy (which sails space, not the sea) on her "snotty" cruise. This trip will determine whether Honor will keep her commission or flunk out of the naval academy as a complete failure. Along for the ride is her constant companion, Nimitz, a tree cat who has bonded with Honor and now is able to share emotions and some empathic ability. Unfortunately, someone who has a grudge against Honor has manipulated the crew roster to include Elvis Santino as her training officer. Besides having the power to ax Honor's career without moving a muscle, Mr. Santino has a real problem with people who are smarter than he is and that definitely includes Ms. Harrington. The outlook for Honor is bleak, to say the least. Like the novel, the three stand-alone stories, which are only lighted connected to Honor, have the flavor of C.S. Forester's Hornblower books. Readers familiar with David Feintuch's Hope series will also see similarities. Weber gives a real feel for the military chain of command both the good and bad parts. While some fans may be disappointed because the novel and stories don't interlock, the individual works have more than enough suspenseful action to engross the reader. (Mar.)

Worth the price just for Flint's story.

First of all, I should say that I loved the first Harrington books so much, I would probably buy any book with David Weber's name on it. Granted, some of the later works have been a little less stellar, but the overall story still has me hooked. Now, on to the contents of this anthology. Three of the stories are by The Man himself, so I will discuss those first.
MS. MIDSHIPWOMAN HARRINGTON is a little piece detailing some of Honor's early exploits against Silesian pirates and Manticoran bigots. Solidly written, it will no doubt provide a base for future short stories or novels set before Basilisk Station.
CHANGER OF WORLDS is the first Harrington story told from the point of view of the 'cats. In it we learn Nimitz and Samantha's real names as they visit Nimitz's clan prior to the birth of their 'kittens. This story verifies some of the theories floated in previous novels as to why treecats decided to settle en masse on Grayson.
Like some of the other reviewers, I enjoyed NIGHTFALL as a stand-alone story. It describes in much greater detail Esther McQueen's aborted coup attempt. While I was glad to learn more about the incident, however, I feel that this should rightfully have been told as part of a novel format. Perhaps if it had been switched for some of the endless backstory in ASHES OF HONOR, I would feel better about both books.
Finally, Eric Flint's FROM THE HIGHLANDS is a nearly uncredited gem of a story. (You won't find his name anywhere on the cover.) We get to learn what happened to Anton Zilwicki after the death of his Navy-hero wife; it turns out he became a spy and went to Earth. When his daughter is kidnapped, several convergent story lines spring into action, leading to political disillusionment, True Romance, rioting in the streets, an assassination or two, and a general warm fuzzy feeling. I would be delighted if Flint wrote more in this vein, especially if he returned to characters like idealistic SS officer Victor Cachat. This could also be a chance for a lot of Weber fans to check out more of Flint's body of work. I know I will.
To sum up, the three Weber stories are fine appendages to his books. For the most part, they detail events already described in general. While they stand up fairly well as individual stories, they don't really compare to Flint's tale.

Dot the I's Cross the T's and Flint's Story is Great!

First, while i think the cover's better than the one on "Worlds of Honor", it's still not right -- those legs belong on a tree-antelope, not a tree-cat.
"But what's *in* it?", right?
This is another anthology, featuring three stories by Dave and one by Eric Flint.
The first story is "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington". ((For a couple of reasons - ease of speaking being a major one, tradition another -- i think i'd have said "misdhipman", but it's Dave's call -- his world, his ranks.))
The story of Honor's "Snotty" cruise, it fills in the background on remarks she makes during "Among Enemies" about having been on pirate-chasing missions in Silesia.
As usual, with Honor onboard, what ought to have been a relatively routine cruise with a bit of action and not much danger turns into something else. ((I mean, finding out you'll be serving with Honor Harrington is like being a cop in a small town finding out that Jessica Fletcher is visiting...)) And Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington finds that she must rise to the occasion when disaster strikes. This story is a little more open and clear about the political maneuvering between the "working" Navy and the "timeserving" Navy (my terms) in which Honor's career is already inevitably enmeshed, long before she knows it or of it.
Also it has a Villain. I'll be writing a longer review for my new website, wherein i'll go into my thoughts on Villains vs. Bad Guys in Dave's stories. (By my reckoning, Rob Pierre is a Bad Guy -- Pavel Young is a Villain. Wossname who was behind the Dome failure is a Bad Guy [though with villainous tendencies] -- his dupe who Honor kills is a Villain.)
Second story is "Changer of Worlds", which has been available for more than a year on my family website by David's kind permission; it's the story of Laughs Brightly, bondmated to Cloud Dancer, who returns to his clan bringing Golden Voice, his new mate.
We know these people a bit better under other names, suffice to say. (Hint -- one of them is also known as "Nimitz")
(Skipping the Eric Flint story for right now, we get to Dave's third, "Nightfall".)
"Nightfall" is one of those stories that eventually has to be told in some form, if only as footnotes in some other work, i guess, but which i'd as soon not read. Despite the fact that there's a rather nasty little slice of spacewar let loose planetside in a major city, it's pretty much a static story of coup and countercoup and political maneuver.
We aready know the fates, if not descriptions of the actual events, of a number of characters from other books. "Nightfall" is the actual events. I found it uninvolving and unneeded.
Now, back to Eric Flint's "From the Highlands", which is, i think, the best piece of pure storytelling more or less for its own sake in the book. All of the other three stories are there to plug holes in the canon, and read more or less like that.
"Highlands", while it chronicles events that may well be as important in the future history of Manticore and Haven as the other three, just reads like a story Flint wanted to tell; in which we look at the ways Gryphon's Highlanders are like Scotland's.
Involving conflicting and complex loyalties personal, patriotic and political, it revolves around the kidnapping of a fourteen-year-old girl whose father, a Gryphon Highlander, is an Intelligence Analyst attached to Manticore's Embassy in the Solarian League's capital city, Chicago.
Not just any fourteen-year-old girl; we've seen her before, when she was four or so, asking her weeping father if Mama had made them all safe from the bad Peeps. And she is everything her mother's daughter should be -- she's already working on escape from her kidnappers when first we meet her.
Before the story is over, we will be involved with Helen's father, with her martial arts instructor, with Havenite and Manticoran Ambassadors and their respective Security Chiefs, a young Peep SS Intelligence Field Officer who faces a personal crisis of identity (he actually believes in the ideals of the Revolution), a dissipated Peep Marine Colonel who is rather more, various genetically-engineered "super-soldiers" and revolutionary former slaves and an expatriate, far-leftist Manticoran noblewoman, one of only three people kicked out of the House of Lords by vote of their peers.
Stir thoroughly, apply igniter and stand well back till the flames die down.
Serve hot.
I give the book three stars overall; just the first three stories would have gotten four, just the Weber stories alone about three stars.
Good solid reading till the next novel, but it goes by awfully dismayingly and disappointingly quickly, which is one of the problems of a fast pace.

Tantalizing Tidbits

Like many others addicted to the Honor Harrington series, I was drooling over the prospects of savoring the latest addition to Weber's engaging feast of antics and action by a ballsy, totally entrancing heroine in futuristic space fiction.
I especially enjoyed the riveting "From the Highlands" by Eric Flint that provides quite a different angle on the aggressive, covert machinations of a highly developed underground where a Manticoran aristocrat exiled to Terra supports a network of revolutionists who are involved in the power struggle between the Peeps vs the Manties on Chicago's embattled turf. Weber's story "Nightfall" recounts the treachery and tyranny of Oscar Saint Just before he finally makes the call to blow up and bring down the Octagon upon the heads of both colleagues and his arch enemy Esther McQueen. It offered another point of view in those final moments that preceeded Saint Just's own demise in "Ashes of Victory".
The other two stories were tantalizing tidbits of before and after Honor had "arrived" to the here and now in David's ongoing saga. I love his consciousness toward animals, especially when he develops his theme of highly evolved sentience in Honor's treecats and their nestmates on Sphinx. It now is impossible to consider one's own cats as merely, well, cats. As Samantha might say to Nimitz: "Little do they know".
Congratulations on your newly wed status and the joys of a honeymoon, David, however your fans are waiting! Thanks for the appetizers in "Changer of Worlds", now, where is the main dish?
