Lame, pointless, self-aggrandizing

Don't waste your money. Short, full of cliches, trite, and just a chance for the "author" to attempt to blow his own horn. No research, no facts, just cliches and the same stuff your mother always told you.

Skeptical but surprising

This book opens with a powerful realization that made me immediately question my ability to be engaging: How can I make people like me if my attention is usually focused on my cell phone? I didn't think I would be hit with the idea that I NEEDED to read this book that quickly. But technological advances are affecting people's social abilities, including my own. I shamefully have to admit I have been guilty of paying too much attention to a screen and not enough attention to the person right in front of me. That's not exactly the most comfortable thing to confess... However, it did compel me to keep reading. It also compelled me to finish the book quite quickly and leave a review so others might see how helpful this material can be for them!
If you're looking to read about networking, or dating, or making and maintaining friendships with a present and approachable attitude that makes people want to converse with you, and regularly, this book is it. It is full of exercises that are extremely doable in pretty much any social setting. The exercises would be effective for all social interactions; whether you're looking to be more engaging in the dating scene, or during networking functions, or in your friendships- "How to Be the Most Engaging Person..." is full of effective strategies to create a more winning version of yourself.
I especially enjoyed that the author started with exercises that I wouldn't have considered because of their simplicity. For example, he stresses the importance of eye contact, which I would have figured to be a no-brainer! Likewise, the emphasis on listening seemed unnecessary until I considered his elaborations and acknowledged times in my life where I would meet a new friend and I found myself waiting to speak rather than completely hearing out this person's story. Again, I guiltily accepted that this book held more for me than I wanted to admit.
As a woman, I found the section on active listening and ways to amp it up to be the most exciting. I definitely think I will apply those ideas when I am working on how to network in a more engaging fashion. It's weird, but I also think this book could help you understand not only how to be more engaging and charming and charismatic, but I also think this book provides examples of how to be nice when encountering both new and old acquaintances alike.
My favorite section would be the last section- I found it to be the most enlightening (I won't go into any more detail; you should buy the book!). The idea that I can "be engaging by being engaged" really hit home... I just have to practice being involved and present in all future social settings.
I left the book 4 stars for a few reasons. The author doesn't really touch on body language at all after the section about eye contact and I think that it is a HUGE factor in being more engaging. So there's that. I also kind of wish there had been a few more exercises introduced (especially Intermediate and Advanced exercises!) so that I could implement them in my encounters. Lastly, in some ways, in some of the sections, like the one about emotional talk, I felt like the content was geared a little more toward men than toward women... But it might just be because I already know all about being emotional! :)
Despite all that, this book is an excellent, easy read for anyone looking to be a more engaging version of him/herself, in a very genuine way.
