4 stars! An aloof entrepreneur/gallery owner takes on protégé photographer & strikes a deal to control her career, body & soul!
By Avid Reader
"Think of it as a symbol. Here's the chain, joining us together. I know it's a symbol of captivity. Slavery, even. But I also like to think it represents an anchoring. You know, like the rope thrown over the side of a ship."

The Unbreakable Trilogy should be read in order:
Book 1: The Silver Chain
Book 2: The Golden Locket
Book 3: Untitled

The Silver Chain (book 1) opens up with country bumpkin, Serena Folkes, traveling by train to London. She is leaving her ex-boyfriend and a painful past behind in hopes of starting anew as a photographer in the big city. On her first night out with her camera she happens upon a posh neighborhood and some kids trick-or-treating. While taking photographs she is approached by a mysterious stranger, Gustav Levi.

As it turns out Gustav is an enigmatic and aloof entrepreneur and owner of Levi Art Galleries. When he sees Serena's photographs he offers to launch her career, but she has to agree to be his for a period of time. To symbolize that union, she must wear a silver bracelet and when Gustav is near he attaches himself to her via a silver chain.

Their story takes off from there following Serena's career as they delve into an unconventional relationship filled with sexual exploration, seduction, battle for control, uncovering of hidden and painful pasts and teaching each other about letting go....
"Good girl. So. Are you ready to do this? You and me, working and playing together?"

Hero: Gustav Levi/35-40 years/Entrepreneur & owner of Art galleries/$$$$/black hair/black eyes (amber border)/divorced
Gustav Levi played the part of the very complex, hot-cold, and aloof hero to perfection! Book 1 will only scratch the surface of this remarkably handsome and broken man. Seven words to describe Gustav: Aloof, captivating, elusive, flawed, dominant, moody and enigmatic.

Heroine: Serena Folkes/20 years/Photographer/auburn-cinnamon hair/green eyes/orphan.
Serena Folkes is also a complex person, but for me she came across as having two very opposite personalities. The side I loved was the innocent, abused, unloved, neglected reflective and driven Serena whereas in stark contrast the sexually semi-obsessed and skilled part of her did not connect with me.

The Silver Chain ended on a good note albeit a surprising revelation. Gustav and Serena are in a good place while awaiting book 2. Excellent storytelling and plot. A very memorable hero. A promising start for a trilogy!
"Remember, you're free to leave whenever you wish. But I guarantee by the end of our time together you'll wonder how you ever lived without the attention I'm going to lavish on you."

Lush and evocative
By Xkoqueen
Serena Folkes, who has had an abusive upbringing, leaves her home town and first boyfriend behind for the bright lights and promise of London. On one of her first nights in town, she literarily bumps into
mysterious entrepreneur Gustav Levi. Serena doesn’t know it yet, but this handsome stranger will change her life forever. Gustav promises to launch Serena’s photographic career at his gallery, but only if Serena agrees to become his exclusive companion. To mark their agreement, Gustav gives Serena a bracelet to wear at all times. At first the chain on her wrist represents his control, but later is representative of their growing bond.

The Silver Chain was an interesting book that at first didn't feel like most stories in this genre. Serena's departure from Devon was an obvious place to start the story, but it took a few chapters for me to understand the significance of that first scene. Once in London, the story begins quite slowly as the author lyrically describes what Serena sees through her camera lens on brisk Halloween night. I have to admit that at first, I found it to be boring, but the detail of what Serena captures on film becomes far more interesting later in the story.

Once Serena meets the enigmatic and mysterious Gustav, the story starts to take shape. There is an almost mystical feel to Gustav that would definitely appeal to the young and rather sheltered Serena who is looking to have adventures. Gustav's business arrangement with Serena certainly enables her to experience a more adventurous life.

Among other things, Gustav is an artist and gallery owner. At their first meeting at the gallery, Gustav shows off replicas of erotic frescoes from Pompeii (displayed as a menu of sorts in the city's lupanare (bordello). Given the nature of the proposed business deal, it very much feels like a comparison to the arrangement that Serena is considering with Gustav.

The sensuousness and seductiveness of their relationship is described poetically by Primula Bond. The difficult pasts of both characters are explored as their barriers to a "normal", fulfilling relationship.

There are multiple graphic sex scenes--some of which are rather dark.

Good quality writing and character development, but the pace was too slow.

You could read this book as a stand alone, however, the cliff hanger at the end does provide a tempting hook to the next book in this trilogy (and good news, it is already published so you don't have to wait).

Unsure and Confused
By Romance Bound Reviews
Primula Bond’s writing is beautiful. The way she paints the scenes around her characters reminds me of the descriptiveness of the Brontes and Austen. Reading one of her books is a literary experience. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your taste in books. Her extensive descriptions slows down the progress and action of th story. This is a book that can’t be consumed in one gulp. It’s a book meant to be savored with sips of scenery and nibbles of emotions.

As for the story, The Silver Chain left me not really knowing how to truly feel about the story. Part of me was intrigued by Serena’s personal discovery of her voyeuristic photography and her sexuality. The whole chain situation with Gustav is not as sexy as I thought it would be. It actually really confused me. I found that there were a lot of times throughout the novel that I was interrupted in the flow because I was unsure of what was really happening. This is the case when Gustav has Serena chained to him because Bond doesn’t describe the chain itself so it’s really hard to imagine how they are chained together, how thick the chain is, and how long the chain is. Without those details my brain stuttered every time the chain was mentioned. I started to skip the chain scenes in order to keep going with the flow.

The story is definitely unique. Though Gustav is a rich alpha male, he’s very different. He’s not as overly protective as most alpha males and he’s willing to let Serena explore her sexuality with other people (to an extent) because he acknowledges that she is young and should have the opportunity to learn about her sexual proclivities. However, I find a lot of her “exploration” really bizarre. She finds herself in sexual situations where she wasn’t expecting to be doing anything and ends up being pulled in slightly unwillingly but eventually just goes with it.

Overall, this book was definitely intriguing, but slightly confusing in its descriptions. Even though it is touted as comparable to the Fifty Shades trilogy, I’m not sure if I would recommend it to that crowd.

I received this book for review purposes via NetGalley.
