Grand, poetic and mesmerizing...a winner all the way!

As a longtime Thieves World fan, I was jonesing for a brisk fantasy read. Wizard Weather, the third in the Sacred Band Tales short story series definitely scratched that itch. I love revisiting these characters, even for just a short period of time. Janet Morris writes with eloquence and verve, with a grandiose touch I can only compare to Homer's Iliad. Getting lost in a fantasy never felt so good!

A wonderful blend of fantasy and mythology, full of heroic action, and richly-drawn, fascinating characters!

This iconic novella introduces the Sacred Band concept to modern fiction, and the sensual delicacy with which the author handles these male/female pairs of crack fighters is worthy of note. The warriors who come to the fantasy town of Sanctuary are not the Sacred Band of Thebes, whom we see in a later novel of by Janet Morris called The Sacred Band, but a fantasy squadron who takes the name "Sacred Band of Stepsons." Add one very special Stepson called Nikodemos, and magic happens. This young hero is the book boyfriend of many ladies and gents, and for good reason. Even without Niko, this novella is spellbinding, as Tempus the Black puts together a cohort to take north to war. To add even more spice, this canonical piece of heroic fantasy also introduces Askelon, lord of dreams, and Jihan the Froth Daughter, stronger than any man and spoiled rotten. I loved these Sacred Band of Stepsons books and was happy to see Wizard Weather available as a stand-alone tale. What a great entry point for new readers to this incomparable and bestselling series.

A beautiful introduction

The title of this novel is what first captured my attention. It made me curious-enough to read the blurb, and then the blurb made me curious enough to read the sample, and next thing I knew, I was one-clicking this title to get it on my kindle for an immediate read. While everyone's classifications of genres seem to be different (for example, what I consider epic fantasy someone else might consider a dark fantasy), this book for my tastes fell into the high fantasy category. I'm admittedly not usually a fan of this genre, but as you can see here, there are exceptions. Wizard Weather is one such exception.
I've actually never heard of the Sacred Band before. I was unaware it was a thing. I have to say, the way the world building is presented in this novel makes it clear and easy to follow. So if you haven't read anything with this multifaceted mythology before, I suggest you start here. Niko makes for a tempting hero--he's, well, rather dreamy--probably one of the reasons I ended up loving this book so much! And I cheered him on the whole way as he sought to find balance within himself.
This story is exceptional in both it's prose and delivery, and if you read between the lines, you will find there is more to this rich world building that simple action and excitement. As a fan of literary fiction as well, I would say that this fantasy will easily find it's home in the heart of literary readers and fantasy readers alike.
