The Kingdom of God is at Hand

In the New Testament Gospels, people marveled at how Jesus taught as someone who had authority. When I read the writings of Paul, I am impressed by his spiritual understanding and knowledge. He wrote, taught and preached as someone who had authority and knowledge that is beyond the average Christian.

I see not as much, but the same understanding in the writings of C.S. Lewis, and now in the writing of Dallas Willard, a present-day philosopher and theologian who wrote The Divine Conspiracy.

"The Kingdom of God is at hand" is the pervasive theme of this book, with every argument, thought and example pouring into this theme. Willard explains logically that this kingdom is not something in the distance to be experienced after death only, but is a miracle to be experienced in the here and now. His explanation of "the kingdom of God is the range of his effective will, where what he wants done is done." (P. 25) It is that simple. According to Willard, we can be part of that kingdom in our everyday lives.

Since reading this, I have to admit to changing some of my prayers, to asking the Father to help me to live within this kingdom. I have felt a difference.

Willard's work is brilliant and his theology is right on the mark.(Keep in mind that this assessment comes from a layperson). This 400 page book took me two weeks to read because I couldn't read it like I do most books. Most books, I just zip right through. But not this one. I had to read a section or two and then take time to reflect on the words.

If there was anything in this book at all that I did not like, it was that he took the liberty to paraphrase scriptures into his own words. I like for scripture to be quoted as is, in a particular book. For if everyone who wrote paraphrased scripture to suit their purpose, there would be many distortions. I followed the scriptures quoted in the first half of this book with my bible and found one citation to be incorrect on the bottom of page seventeen where he quotes a story as coming from Luke, Chapter 5; it should have read Chapter 7. Other than that, this book was perfect. In Willard's defense about the paraphrasing, he did disclose this in the his Introduction. And, he is after all, Dallas Willard. He may be qualified enough to do his own paraphrasing.

The same thing that I am criticizing, I found that I liked at points. When discussing the Beatitudes on the Mount, he put some of the conditions in a description that hit home to me:

"Blessed are the physically repulsive,
Blessed are those who smell bad,
The twisted, misshapen, deformed,
The too big, too little, too loud,
The bald, the fat and the old-" P. 123

What contemporary can not identify with some element of this passage.

After Willard discusses the God's Kingdom, he discusses how to become the disciple of Jesus with practical suggestions for entering into discipleship. He ends this book with a discussion of death.

This book covered too much to be discussed in one post. Let me say that as Christians, there are certain books that we should have on hand and read annually. The first is the Holy Bible. The second is C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. This is the third. I am sure that there are many others. But this book has the potential, when used in tandem with the Holy Bible, to change lives for the better.

I recommend the disc interview with Dallas Willard as an important support for the book. In fact, I recommend listening to the disc BEFORE you read the book. You will finish with a fresh view of your faith.

Bleak but entertaining

Few authors can write despair as well as Ann Aguirre. She creates bleak landscapes, hardened characters and almost hopeless lives but gives her readers just enough warmth and light to make the reading of her tales possible. In her newest offering, Perdition, we are introduced to a prison spaceship for the worse possible criminals. The criminals are divided into various factions and these disparate groups are always engaged in battles for resources. Dred is the leader of the least noxious of the factions and recruits a newcomer, Jael, to her side when he is sent to ship. The book unfolds with various political machinations, a lot of bloodshed, enough humor to keep us sane and surprising moments of tenderness and loyalty to give us hope. Dred and Jael tentatively form a relationship that is based on mutual respect rather than the instalust dynamic that most authors in this genre utilize. The unfolding of their relationship and the stumbles towards trust and intimacy are believable and a little heartbreaking. Like most epics this book leads up to an ultimate showdown between Dred and her enemies with long, well written battle scenes.

This is a well-developed world in which no character has only one face or motivation. The inhabitants of Perdition are reticent to share their stories which adds a layer of mystery. Aguirre skillfully weaves in some psychic abilities, genetic experiments and aliens so that readers are constantly reminded that this is a truly unique world in which the rules can change at any time.

Dred is now on my top ten list of favorite heroines. Many female authors struggle to write truly tough heroines. I find that many urban fantasy heroines are immature and more prone to bravado than bravery. This is no self-sacrificing warrior maiden who needs her alpha mate in order to succeed. Dred never boasts - she delivers. She is flawed and scarred and brave and cruel and beautiful. I eagerly await the next addition to the Dred Chronicles.

Violence and mayhem, Ann Aguirre style!

Back when Perdition was first mentioned, pitched as Prison Break in space (I kid you not), I immediately knew it would be a dream come true. Because seriously, violence and mayhem, Ann Aguirre style? In space?! Give me that, and then give me some more! So when it finally found its way into my greedy little hands, I was basically in ecstasy. And I remained in an absolute state of bliss throughout.

While this trilogy may be a Jax series spin-off, readers who aren't familiar with Jax won't be at a loss at all. It is entirely possible to read (and fully enjoy) this separately. Details that were previously known about Jael get reintroduced pretty quickly in Perdition so that everyone is at the same place. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't find the time to read Jax - you should - but it's not a prerequisite.

Space station known as Perdition houses only the most hardened of criminals. The people imprisoned there are no small-time thieves, rapists or murderers. It takes a truly heinous crime (or hundreds of them) to get someone a one-way ticket to Perdition from the Conglomerate. `Innocent' is not a word that gets thrown around often, not even for our heroine, Dresdemona "Dred" Devos.

Taking the reader on a space station where not a single redeemable character lives may seem like a simple thing, but believe you me, it's an enormous challenge. We are all, each of us in a slightly different way, emotional readers, and we love to feel sympathy for our characters, but it takes a brilliant author to make us feel sympathy for mercenaries and mass murderers.

In some ways, Perdition is the darkest Ann Aguirre book yet - not because it's the most violent (although it's certainly at the very top) - but because there isn't a single ray of light anywhere on that ship. It is a place where end always justifies the means, and survival is the only thing that counts.

For me, the magic of Aguirre's writing comes from two sources: the first is her excellent understanding of human nature and psychology, and the second her incredible gift for metaphors. If Ann's elegant, no-nonsense writing style is the body of this story, the few well-placed, hard-hitting metaphors are its very soul. With no more than a few words, Aguirre unfailingly manages to both bring forth the desired emotional response and leave her readers in awe of her writing skills.

The more I tried to choose and point out my favorite thing about this book, the more I realized that such a feat was next to impossible. I was just about ready to put Dred and Jael's relationship on the pedestal, only to remember, among other things, certain bloody battles that took my breath away. With each new book she writes, Ann Aguirre has to live up to some pretty high standards, and she achieves it so effortlessly every single time.

Perdition will give you no time to breathe, but it will make you appreciate your freedom, the roast beef sandwich you had for lunch, and that extra bar of soap in your bathroom. It will also make you care for its characters despite their awful and violent histories. My recommendation? Get out of that chair and go grab a copy now!

Great Introduction to Asimov's vision

The only reason I've rated this book only four stars is because some of Asimov's later books in the same series, written later in his career (Naked Sun, Robots of Dawn) get even better. However, this is where you need to begin--don't jump ahead. This is a thought-provoking and entertaining read in its own right.
Asimov combines the mystery genre and many of his futurist ideas together in this series. You'll enter a world where people live underground because there isn't enough living space, and where many people have grown resentful of robots that are taking over jobs that humans once held. Not only do you get to experience a great mystery-adventure, but you're also exploring the social consequences of near-human robots and the continued urbanization of the Earth.
Daneel Olivaw, the robot partner to detective Elijah Baley, is one of the most memorable characters in the field of speculative fiction.
This is the best place to start reading Asimov. If you enjoy this, you will absolutely love the sequels. After reading the Robots books, try the Foundation series, which starts slower but gets very good--and ultimately rewards readers of the Robot books by tieing it all together.

One of Asimov's very best

This is one of Asimov's best science fiction novels. The description of New York, in a future where Earth's cities are built underground (for fear of attack from other planets colonised by humans), is totally convincing. The people of Earth are agorophobic and live in standardised, basic conditions due to overpopulation and scarcity of resources. Asimov's description is fascinating. The novel also deals with robots in detail, according to Asimov's famous Three Laws which govern their behaviour. Asimov writes some very interesting speculation on robot psychology and attitude towards humans, and their attitude towards the robots. This novel really shows Asimov's talent for writng intelligent science fiction and plausible future history. It is mainly a mystery story, and althogh I haven't read many detective novels, I thoght it was well written and the ending was surprising. Before reading this novel, I would recommend reading Asimov's short stories dealing with robots. These deal with the early development of robots, and make what happens in this book clearer. 'The Caves of Steel' is followed by more Robot novels, and then the Galactic Empire and Foundation novels. You should read the whole series, but make sure you read them in order. Like all of Asimov's novels, this book has a clever plot and is very thought provoking. A must if you're a serious science fiction fan.

The Laws of Robotics ... this is where it all started!

A thousand years ago, mankind began the process of leaving mother Earth and colonizing the galaxy. Fifty planets have been now been colonized by thinly spread populations of hardy pioneering spirits - rough and ready types willing to work in hostile environments with robots as help-mates and partners - and it is obvious that mankind has evolved down two diverging sociological paths. The Earthmen - those who chose to stay at home in tightly cramped almost global city hives under the pressure of explosive population growth, an incredibly strict socialist regime and diminishing available resources - have grown timid of the slightest exposure to outside light, weather and even "un-conditioned" air. Robots, seen as competing with humans for jobs, the only meager source of status in this highly regulated environment, are despised and feared. While diplomacy and trade are maintained between Earthmen and Spacers, relations are strained and mutual distrust bordering on hatred has become the norm.

When a Spacer is murdered by a visiting Earthman, the governments on both sides realize that the crime must be solved quickly and quietly to prevent a complete collapse of diplomatic relations and an explosion of tension into riots, chaos, open animosity, perhaps even a war! The Commissioner of the New York City police force orders Elijah Baley, an Earthman detective who doesn't like robots any more than the next guy, to check his emotions at the door and partner up with a Spacer robot, R Daneel Olivaw, to solve the crime.

"Caves of Steel", a classic novel from the pen of Isaac Asimov - one of the acknowledged giants of science fiction writing - can be enjoyed on so many different levels. On the surface, it's an exciting, tightly plotted and nicely conceived police procedural and standard mystery set in a fascinating futuristic setting with a completely unexpected ending twist. On a deeper level, it's a foreboding, grim, bleak look at the imagined social future of mankind unless population growth is brought under control and the problems of diminishing availability of food and energy resources are addressed and solved. Finally, "Caves of Steel" is one of the first of an intricate series of novels that explores Asimov's now famous "Three Laws of Robotics", the behaviour of robots with positronic brains indelibly programmed with these three laws and the potential interactions of these robots with predictably unpredictable humans.

A combination of the best of hard and soft science fiction from one of the very best science fiction writers who sadly is no longer with us! Highly recommended.

Ottolenghi scores big with "Ottolenghi"

My admiration for this author/chef knows no limits. Really. I've been cooking out of Ottolenghi's "Plenty" cookbook for the past year or so at least twice a week and it's changed the family's eating habits and appreciation of good taste astronomically. So when this newly published cookbook (from the restaurant menu) was published in the U.S., I was interested. At the same time, I wondered how the newbie could improve and/or expand on the author's two previous (and terrific) books. I shouldn't have been the least bit skeptical. "Ottolenghi" is even better than its predecessors and chock-a-block full of great new food.

I come to this opinion from the perspective of someone who cooks almost exclusively vegetarian dishes. "Ottolenghi" is about two-thirds non-meat in content. Lots of terrific new vegetable entrees and sides, with the usual emphasis on freshness, herbs, nuts and Middle East/Mediterranean spices. What's really new in the author's approach in this cookbook is a generous section on desserts (most of them adaptations of classics) and many recipes for sauces that can be used with a lot of different entrees or as dips, spreads, etc.

I'm just getting started in using this new book--and in fact started with dessert! How does chocolate chestnut bar sound? A kind of exotic brownie, but richer and creamier than the traditional approach. Killer taste. The same chapter includes a fine recipe for a more traditional brownie, but clearly better, judging from the ingredients.

I'm a total fan of this guy and his books and have been giving them as gifts for the past year. I even gave one to a Moroccan friend who is a wonderful cook, but who became an instant admirer and regular user of Ottolengthi's "Plenty". So get the new one or at least one of the earlier books--it/they will change your life.

Can't get Enough of Otolenghi

Yotam Ottolenghi puts together phenomenal cookbooks; his recipes are simple but elegant, using fresh vegetables (and in some cases meat) in new ways that adds a new spark to the ho hum vegetarian cookbooks that are out there.

He has won awards for his first cookbook "Jerusalem" and all three of his later books are equally as good and innovative in their recipes and simplicity.

Plus the book has a coating so it wipes clean after use - how awesome is that!!

Amazing

I have so many cookbooks some might see it as ridiculous I buy yet another...but this one is really quite special. This book is very inspiring. Nice pictures, they really bring the dishes to life. However, it's the inventive, thoughtful combination of ingredients that just blow me away. Seriously, I just look at the picture of the green bean and pea dish and 20 other variations pop in my head. I am not a recipe follower too often, mostly I just read and then start chopping whatever is in the kitchen. I heartily recommend it even though I have barely read through 15 pages. The authors are VERY specific in their cooking directions in a really good way. They also like their veggies a bit on the crunchy side for our family's taste, but that is simple to change. I wish it was in paperback so it was easier to read in bed.

Living lean for life!!

6 weeks on dolce diet

Not a diet, just recipes that taste great and healthy. I eat 3 meals a day and snacks. Im training for a Marathon and only wish I got the proper nutrition from the beginning. I have purchased all books. Love all the recipes. Listen to weekly free pod casts. I didnt really need to drop LBS. (5) but getting soo toned and running so much better. I exercise 6 days a week and was one of the persons that couldnt understand why I didnt look better. Just 6 weeks and my stomach the Pooch I thought I was doomed with, is gone. My BMI 17%(Im a Women). Im rocking my long runs. Thanks Mike and Brandy for sharing!! Everyday people like me need your receipes to get an idea to incorporate into our everyday lives. Now my entire Family is eating lean...

Embrace your dark side

I've enjoyed all the books in this series, but this is by far the best story line and character work. Quentin and Aryal fight each other and themselves and as Quentin says "Somehow it will be okay."

Angry Aryal defies us to like her...and wins!

When I realized that Aryal's book was the next one in the series I was SO disappointed. Aryal was a character who was more of a cartoon than anything else. She was Angry Aryal who hated just about everyone and everything. It is just like her to be defiant enough to get us to like her and still be Angry Aryal. That was Thea's challenge in this book. She had to flush Aryal's character out in order to make the audience empathize with her and root for her. In order to do this Aryal needed to have more than one emotion. She would need to become a much more complex character AND she needed a mate who was her mirror. Quentin is as dominant as they come. There was less known about him so he might have been easier to write because he was more of a blank slate. The Elder Race full novels had hit a plateau. Drago's and Pia were a tough act to follow. Dragos is a fantastic character because he is ruthless, cunning, yet caring and patient with Pia in a way that was true to his character. Aryal is like Dragos in that way. Thea worked her magic with Drago's and she has done it again with Aryal. Quentin and Aryal has that cosmic chemistry that keeps the reader hooked to see what will happen next. I must warn readers that the sexual side of their relationship is not to for the faint of heart. They are aggressive and somewhat caustic personalities and this comes through in every area of their relationship. Normally, I would have shied away from this but in this book it worked and walked the line between too much and not enough just fine. Thea Harrison worked the magic that was lacking in Tiago's and Rune's books (at least for me). The Elder Races will maintain the edge that makes it a spectacular series and not fizzle out. The writer making such an unlikable character as Aryal will always be able to find ways to make miracles happen!!

Among the best in the series

Some reviewers have complained about being "tricked" into reading "trash" or S&M. This book has some slightly unconventional sex, but readers need to remember that signed up for fairly explicit content, especially since this series has never been shy. With that, the author can do what she wants. No one is being tricked into reading filthy content, and the way everything was handled in this book was pretty pro-female and not offensive to the reader. The author has the liberty of creating characters the way she wants to and if that doesn't fit in the traditional box of what's right and what's dirty then read a Harlequin series and play it safe. I liked that she took things in a bold direction.

The secondary storyline in this book was particularly strong. It felt like TH is finally hitting her stride. I'll admit that I wasn't thrilled by the 2nd and 3rd books in this series, with the books about Pia and Dragos being my favorites. The balance in Kinked between romance and action is superb. The setting is very cool, since they are exploring a basically deserted magical world. The bad guy is pretty creepy, and the main characters struggle pretty hard to achieve their goals. I loved the descriptions of some areas of the world they were exploring, and I really pictured what was going on.

The about-face of Aryal and Quentin's relationship from hate to like was abrupt but well-handled by the author. It was a little bizarre to see them think about how they had lusted after each other even while they were enemies. I don't think that is usually the case with peoples' emotions and I don't really like the trope of lust masquerading as anger/violence. That being said, the author did a great job of making the conflict stem from their personalities. Both of them were so different, with Aryal being perhaps more vibrant and interesting than Quentin. Their romance felt natural and passionate with a sweet ending. I wish we had learned more about them as people. I would love to read another book about the two of them and learn more about who they are!

Read: As a part of the series or as a standalone, even though some things will be complicated. DON'T read if you can't handle some rough but respectful sex. Do read if you want something beyond normal PNR and venturing into fantasy romance with darker elements.

Best genius book

My wife has this on her new Kindle and "made" me read it. WOW.I have always felt like I was a lot smarter than my IQ score. Neat learning about Einstein's brain and how it was different. It was also exciting to learn that genius is not a born condition, but is learned. This is a valuable little book and I am going to have my kids read it too.

This is a truly fascinating book. As a psychology major I found the research in this book very fascinating and it is presented in such an easy to understand manner. Anyone can apply the concepts found in this book, it really is for anyone looking to delve deeper into the power of their own brain. Although this is a short read, it is very powerful! I highly recommend this book, not only for students interested in the power of the human brain, but for everyone who wishes to understand the brain and it's true potential. The brain is a terrible thing to waste, and this book helps you look at the brain in a completely different way.

I found it difficult to understand the psychological behavior of brain before I read this, however this explained me how the brain reacts to the different situations. Who Was Bonnie?

Jim Gatewood has several links to Bonnie Parker and her lover Clyde Barrow. This is really the first account that I have read where Bonnie is portrayed as a cold blooded sadistic killer. It takes some getting used to and certainly conflicts with other eye witness accounts of Bonnie as more of a follower and hopelessly in love with Clyde. Nevertheless, Mr. Gatewood has done his homework. His research is well documented. The book is well written and engages the reader.

very well written with lots of new characters. I hope more research and time discovers if there really was a child born. and what happened to the Gypsys and the fortune. wow. Bonnie and Clyde taking airplane rides!

About the Author
"Dr. Bharat Bhasker is currently Professor of Information Technology and Systems, and founder and head of Internet Commerce Research Center at IIM, Lucknow. He is also a visiting professor at several universities abroad, member of several advisory committees of the Government of India, and an honorary expert of the National Science Education and Research Council of Canada. An alumnus of IIT-Roorkee and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. Bhasker has 11 years of work experience in leading US research establishments including NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Bhasker has to his credit several publications including a book Electronic Commerce: Framework, Technologies and Applications published by Tata McGraw Hill. Dr. Srikumar Krishnamoorthy, an alumnus of IIM-Lucknow, is Senior Research Scientist at Infosys Technologies Limited with over 8 years of industry experience in research, product development and consulting. He has published several research papers in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. His key research interests include personalization in e-commerce, data federation, query optimization, information retrieval and machine learning."
